Looks like the 5 is being written off-the estimator still hasnt finished and is up over £5k. CAPs on mine is £4750 so funds are gonna be tight for the next car.

The car will be used for work but that'll mainly be short trips around town and villages plus 25mile each way commute down B roads and majority are slow B roads.

I really fancy a 535 for the next car but have heard horror running cost stories.

So advice please on pros & cons of either 535 or 528?

Sorry to hear your news,i would consider the 528i as i think they are the best of both worlds, decent performance, decent economy, plenty of torque low down and a good allrounder.(not that i am biased)

Should be able to get a nice one for your budget, the 523i is not a bad car either and plenty around at the moment.

E39 prices have taken a tumble so should be able to pick up a nice one for that money.

Seems a shame about yours as it was looking nice with the angels etc...

In answer to your questions i looked at a E34 540i  before settling on the e39 and thought it felt really heavy on the front and didnt like the drive at all.The 525i and 528i seemed much easier to drive.Only my opinion though i would have a go in both and see what you think.

If you lived a bit closer i would let you have a go in mine as a comparison.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers lads. Not so sure bout whats around for the money at the minute. Seems to be a couple of bands though between £4-£5k;

1-528s 1996-1998, pot luck on whether nikasil blocks been changed, 90k-115k miles

2-528s late 1998-2000, 130+k miles

3-535s, 1997 & 98 models specced up and mileage 100-110k.

Don't fancy trawling round looking at 528s only to find they're still on the nikasil block though.

Neither if you fancy another E39 go for the 530d

I had a 535 V8 sport I love hills and B and C class roads the V8 does not like B roads way to heavy and overpowered you're always having to breaking with it. However Jeff Spangle had a 530 or 530d and he seemed to have more control on the same 3 day run and I had to fill up more often with the 535

I'm down to a 320d and it's a good B road sprinter certainly compared to 2.5L or 2.8L petrol motors would have had a 330d if there was more available up here the diesel is definately the back road favourite torque and economy.

Approx 2 tanks petrol to 1 tank diesel over 350 miles even with a heavy foot the fuel bills changed my outlook since I think a 250 mile run is nothing in a day (approx 25 litres of diesel) the V8 would need 50 litres or more for the same day out (less fuel bills more driving days out !)

Hi mate sorry to hear your lost, most say the 528i is the better car out of it and the 523i, but i disagree as the figures in the handbook show slight differance's between the two in performance and economy, and there is a slight differance in insurance aswell.

I own a 96 p 523i proberly with the original nikasil block engine but i dont know for sure, but i know it dosent miss a beat and fires first time every time with 98,000 miles, in the hand book it states the top speed for the 523 is 142 mph and 147 mph for the 528 (dont tell anyone this but i have had the top speed for the 528i out of my 523i so keep that to yourself ok) lol

Thanks for all the tips. Got a busy weekend by the looks of it; 3 528s all MY98-00 on S plates to look at plus a couple of 98/99 535s too.

Couple of the 528s are local-ish but one is up in Cheltenham and one 535 is over in Wales!!
