Sorry if this has beeen covered b4. My M3 E30 1990 convertible had the clock service light on when I bought it 5 months ago, I was told that this means the brake fluid only needs changing.

Having just down a round trip to Kos over 8,000 km I now have a red service light on. I have changed the oil twice, both times when I was in Greece, the second time because I put a hole in the oil cooler. So I should change the filter but don't need to do the oil again. Do those diagnostic tools work okay, presumeably it will turn off the service lights?

I appreciate the importance of keeping the service records up to date but provided I keep a record (as I always have done) of everything I do to the car then I can save myself hundreds of pounds by doing it myself. Anyway what else would BMW do when a red light comes on?

The red light simply means as far as the Service lights are concerned you have driven for a period of time after they told you to get the service done. It's kiddology to more forceful prompt you to get the car serviced. AFAIK, the reset tools from reputable sources will reset the lights fine.

If you have the clock on and service iluminated it is the annual service required which is coolant and brake fluid.
If all the green lights have gone out and you have an amber light on in conjunction with the service iluminated you will need a service 1 or 2.
The red light only comes on if you have missed an oil service or inspection 1 or 2 and is based on mileage and operating conditions.
The annual service is what is says and comes up every year.
The oil service comes up inbetween the inspection 1 & 2.

To clarify,
each time all the green lights go out and the amber light comes on, it goes
Oil service
Inspection 1
Oil service
Inspection 2
Oil service
The annual inspection can come on at any stage but usually can be left to a service or inspection.

get a pice of wire and switch it of your self. Switch Ignition on. Wire in Pin19 first(ground) then in Pin7 (reset) Keep connected for 3 sec Oilservice and 12 sec for Inspection light. You can attach a fuse in the wire for safety.

I always knew you could create a short on the pins to reset the lights but your great picture clarifies the procedure.

Is the pin configuration the same for an e34 5 series

think so, yes. As they use the same reset tool for all BMW's this should be the same procedure. As long your diagnostic socket looks like this. Otherwise I can't guarantee.

and be careful when inserting the wire as you could easily fry the ECU IIRC. You should also use a fuse along the wire (5A?)

YUP

There had to be a downside.  So I'll be careful when and if I need it.

Thanks for the info. I do believe I need a couple of those disks off ebay now to show the way.

You have to do it again. And again.... Sometimes it takes a few attempts. Other M3 driver on the german board (where I have stolen the pic ) have reported same problems. Some could get rid of it, other's not even with the use of the BMW tool.

Just done a reset on my car and realised that the pic on the german website has the numbers the wrong way round. Pin 7 is located in front of the "pac man" and 19 at the side. All green lights are on and clock and inspection ore off. 2 attempts needed.
