I've been missing my M5... I sold it some time back and have been swaning around in 525, ok but not setting the world alight. I have now decided that the long in the tooth 525 is going to be replaced bu either an M5, Alpina B10, or 840.

I'm in centreal London so the M5 won't like it much, the last one didn't and neither did my left leg. So, B10 / 840 both autos. Well, the B10 is nice but the 840 has a certain x appeal. I think I need this car for a while its just so .... well !

So, 840, a good long distance cruser. Great looks. Now for a few questions to you experts out there. What should I be looking for? My mind is a 98/99 with the steptronic auto box which I think was the last itteration of the mods. Does anybody know what they do to the gallon? And, are there any pit falls with this car, known problems?

Looking forward to some advice.
Thanks.

Hi Nick,

Yes the 840 is a great long distance cruiser, on the highway I get 10L/100km and it has a 90L tank.

The late model 840Ci you suggest is a good pick.  Alot of information of what to look for and pre purchase info is available here:

If you want probably the best in the UK or world even and have deep pockets, visit BM Classics site. Will find you a link if you cannot.

BTW, nice to see an 8 post.

Thanks to both of u, Ian (aussie840) & Ian for the feedback. Ian, looks quite econonmic for a 4 litre vehicle. (As if it matters!!)

Eta - thanks to you to but I couldn't find the site a link would be great.

Originally I wanted an 850 CSi a 12 cyl. Msport engne appeals regardless of cost. Drove one for around 30 miles and I must admit that in my opinion there is little around that can match this monster for sheer pulling power in the midrage even now. That includes the new M6. Top gear roll on of power was just fantastic. The M6 is great as long as you hit the litte M button and dial in the 501BHP. They are to dam expensive for the next five years!

Thanksa again...

Hi, If you haven't already done you should also visit http://www.e31.net/english.html - http://www.e31.net/english.html  and download the videos.

I should also point out around town 16L/100km is not uncommon :(

Hi folks, went and did a bit of shopping today. Hopefully, I’ve got the car. 50k on the clock. Two sets of wheels both 18in rims, excellent from a type perspective and I couldn’t believe the price. It gives me a few k to get it up to A1 condition. Will keep you chaps informed over the next few months. Will post a pic at some point.

<>Cheers…

Has it got FBMWSH?

Full BMWSH, only been used at weekends. Will be checking with BMW on records of services to be sure.

The leather is a tad unclean because it is cream coloured; nothing that cannot be replaced though. Had my M5 re done on the interior.

Sounds good. Here's an old post that might be of use:-

"I have the number of the Leather Restorer in Braintree, Essex. He has a workshop near mine on the same estate, His Name is Andy Nixon and his number is 07789 123986

He can obtain all BMW colour Leather, as well as orginal BMW Material for all you that don't have Leather.

He can do a repair or refurbish a whole seat. His work is out of this world, definately worth a visit, Prices are very good."

Hi Nick, good luck.  You might need to replace both the batteries if its been left sitting for a while unless its been on a battery tender.

Cheers Ian

Hi folks, got the car. It is great. Round town, she's great, on the open road its far to easy to hit 140. Love it! But as ever there are a few things that will need attension. The ABS, the traction thing (which I usually switch off anyway).... This is a big car but it sticks to the road, but have manages to get it sideways twice so far... fantastic. Hope it can put up with my driving. Oh, yes and an airbag warning. All to be fixed.

Oh, yes. On the fuel consumption, which I beleiver I asked about... Errr, well give the above in sport and manual mode on the box. Not had double figures on this tank full. Managed to get 19mpg on a more sidate cruse.

A monster Beemer. Love it. Hate to say it as it may be showing my age a bit, but I prefer it to my x M5. Have to try an M6.

Ok chaps help required.

On the ABS front, the ABS has failed, it seems to be electrical, however, I guess there is one of you out there that may have some sound advice. Another question is could this be related to the ASC failure? Any suggestions would be good before I have to pull the car from this German vehicle specialist!

Is anybody out there up on the diagnostics on an 840? I'm an IT bod and all I need is the software and the connectors for a laptop. Can anybody inform me of software for an 840 diagnostic etc.

Thanks.

Hi Nick, The ASC uses the ABS sensors. I suggest you replace both front ABS sensors. Do you know how to set the OBC to show velocity (Option 08) in diagnostic mode - this uses the ABS sensor, if no reading - indicates dodgy ABS sensors.

Ian, thanks. Have more bad news. The sensors, I'm told, are ok. Its a pump aparrently. That which runs the braking system and asc. I've been quoted well over 1K just for the pump, let alone the labour. I'm not sure about what I'm being told. Second opinion time. Sounds a lot for a defective pump.

Any advice?

regards,
Nick.

Hi got to agree with you they are the business i get from 17mpg on the CSI through to 22 and 25 on the 840's auto 4 and 4.4 engines. 26 on the manual 840. On a good run the motorway and not caned you should be good for 26 on both the 840 and 850 but not the CSI

But what the hell its just getting into them and driving them, don't forget the manual very different beast but fun all the same.

Enjoy the monment when you see another 8 on the road, shame the register does so little!!!!

Cheers

John, thanks for the mpg info. Interesting. Currently I have had between 14 and 22 mpg. Yes, they are an absolute pleasure and I'd love to see a number of them all together at some point. Maybe we need to work on that.

But getting back to the "moment". Open the door, get in, roll down all the windows and then fire up the engine. That moment! Need I say more, its like driving silk.

On the down side, the car is currently being sorted out, probably at significant cost. But it will be going over to Europe for a very long drive. Thats what they are good at.

We need to think about getting a number of 8's together for the summer (somewhere in the UK).

Nick.

Nick, was the car diagnosed at a BM dealership and are they carrying out the repair?

Unfortunatly no. I've now moved to car to a friend of mine who has always maintained my M series cars. He'll sort it. He knows more about fixing BM's that BMW. He actually fixes them as opposed to swapping out old for new parts which in certain caes just fail again because of bad design.

Am expecting a bit of a bill but he will sort the car. He's used to 8's.

regards,

Good to hear that there are still engineers/technicians out there. I have an engineer friend in the professional video world who despairs of 'board changers'!
