I have been looking for an Alpina B10 engine to fit in my E9 CS coupe. Now I came across a Getrag 262 sports- ('dogleg') gearbox in Germany and according to the owner it is the one that goes with the engine. Now I seem to remember from a B10 I had before that the car had a "straight" 5-speed gearbox. I wonder if the guy is having me on or that the 262 is indeed the correct gearbox for the B10. Maybe it only applies to german cars, and what is the difference with the 265?

This is a tricky one!

Being a B10 it will be an old E28 or 6 Series. The
sport gearbox is actually a Getrag 265, but the
casing is from the old 4 speed 262 which your CSL
has along with every other E9, E3 or E12. What you
need are the punched in serial numbers on the edge
of the bellhousing, or more specifically the letters
following the numbers.
Most B10's were 5 speed overdrive using the 260
gearbox (standard post 9/82 M30 gearbox) which is
useless in an E9 because there is no speedo drive.

The first problem with the later E28 type 265 'box
(same as the E30 M3 incidentally) is that the
gearlever is mounted on a long alloy extension that
swivels on a pin on the end of the 'box. If this is too
long or too short (very likely) then it will need to be cut
and welded. Another problem(!) is that although a
late E28 type 265 has a hole for a speedo drove,
there will probably be no gear in there meaning the
'box has to be partially stripped and the speedo
gears from your CSL box fitted.

A better unit would be an early (78-82) 635CSi sport
gearbox which had the bolt on steel extension which
I'm sure is spot on length wise and if not, is easier to
cut and weld. The also have a proper speedo cable
drive. A mate of mine in West London has one but
you'll be paying 250 quid for one these days as
they're rare. If you are running Motronic with the B10
engine then you hit another snag because these
boxes don't always have the two essential mounting
lugs for the two TDC sensors on the bellhousing.

PM me and I'll give you his number.

Gus, find out the serial number on the gearbox and
I'll tell you exactly what it is and if it will do the job!

It will be stamped into one of the machined faces
around the edge of the bellhousing and is normally
on the bottom edge.

firstly im no techno head when it comes to cars.

i have a 1989 750i alpinweib ll?? (been told its alpina). it was modified at factory when first built.   my problem is, that every so often you get some boy racer cut you up, so you just have to make him look a complete plant pot.

when i select the gear ratio from (E) economy into (S) sport mode all is ok, but i cant get it to go back to economy when the car is in motion. it will go into (M) manual and back to sport. the only way i can get it back to (E) is to stop the car and let it sit a couple of minutes.

is this just a sticky button, or are we looking terminal illness here?

if it needs looking at, can anyone recomend someone in the norfolk area? not main dealer, i already have 1 mortgage thanks.

take care

Could well be the switch, well known for filling with
crud and dust.

been informed this used to do this radomly when my late father had it, but he could afford the fuel costs in winging round norfolk in sport mode, i cant.

any idea how you go about cleaning any crap out of the switch?

bear in mind this was one of the last hand made cars bmw did, was not a production line unit, so the idea of a couple of screwdrivers to prize a cover off to get to screws is not the way forward.

Phil,

There are a couple of BMW specialists in Norfolk, Ralph (Stephan BMW) who is an ex BMW technician and very knowledgeable, near Dereham (01362 860771) or Herring and Palmer in Norwich (01603 666585), who may be able to help you out.
