Need some details of the age mileage and exact engine if single Vanos or double Vanos. I need also the quality of the engine at a "stone cold" idle is it lumpy?

I suspect that at worst the banging noise is coming from piston slap if,,, it is internal. Can you do a compression check on all six cylinders? that will show any leakdown in the bores

If the car has full Sytner history, push for a BMW goodwill contribution to any work required.

Yep. Be reasonable, but assertive. If your dealer will not play ball, write to BMW GB and tell them you want their Zone Technical Manager to inspect the car on their next visit to that, or another, dealer.

I was told that some 728's were affected by the Nikasil issue.

Cylinder linings having premature wear from sulphur rich petrol. Mainly an issue with V8's. Do a search for nikasil at the very top of the page.
