Hi

Just bought myself a 635csi, anmd was wondering how to date them etc, the guy reckons that he will forward on all the paper work for it and he says it is 1984 model but it has red handles on the dials.

Just wondering if anyone can offer any help on were to check out about the 6 series

You mean you haven't seen the V5???

Well, ok. An '84 is what's known as a Phase 2 model. That is it's based on the  E28 5-series. It has chrome bumpers as opposed to the bigger  bumpers of the Highline models (from '87).

"Red handles on the dials" ? If you mean red hands on the dials it sounds like someones been customising. AFAIK all Sixes had white hands on a black background though the M635 & Alpina's may well have had red. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Your Six may have TRX tyres in which case the best advice I can give is to get a set of wheels from an E34 5-series, E32 7-series or, if you're very lucky, an 8-series & fit those. TRX's are expensive & cr@p. just don't go there.

Have a look at http://www.BigCoupe.com - BigCoupe.com for lots of info.

Ditto http://www.unixnerd.demon.co.uk/e24.html - Unixnerd 635 and http://bimmer.roadfly.org/bmw/forums/e24/ - E24 Roadfly forum.

Books? The BMW 6 Series Enthusiast Companion is the bible. Later revisions have given it an odd mix of American/UK measurements etc. Bit over priced although the softback version will be cheaper.

Post specific questions here & you're sure to find someone who knows the answer. Probably.

if you put the last 7 numbers of the chassis number in to the following link, it will tell you the month and year of the cars build, and give you a usefull parts catalogue:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do - http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do

The chassis number is on the bulkhead - or the V5 which you should have inspected!!!

I only really bought the car for parts as I have my eye on a very clean looking M6 which has been stood for about 6 or 7 years.

I have found out that the car I bought is a 1981 635CSi, but I have been informed that this model has 4 pot calipers on the front !

Cheers

you have an E12 based car. The M6 is an E28 chassis. The E12 four pots are very heavy steel calipers (unlike the M6) and are designed to grasp 22mm thickness discs. Only a few trim parts and odds and ends will interchange between the two cars you mention; nearly everything is different.....

sorry to be the bearer of bad news....

cheers

Yeah I know that the E12 based car will not interchange with the M6 model but for the money I paid for it to get a 3.5 engine with only 100000 on it was a steal.

Oil is like new in the engine and it recently had 1200 spent on it with a BMW dealer before it was hit.

Only thing that is puzzling aswell is that it has a big plastic front bumper !

Could be that someone's stuck a "Highline" bumper on it.....

that is just the spoiler. The bumper is the bit that bolts to. This pattern spoiler was standard on 635s until '82, IIRC.

cheers
