I'm a new member of the club, although not new to BMW's having owned other models before my current car, that being a 528i saloon. Recently the rear bulb warning display showed bulb failure, which i replaced and all was well for a day or two, however dispite the fact the brake lights are all working fine i still get the warning display and a "Bong" each time i start the car, please can anybody tell me what might be the reason?

Can't help you with your problem but you would be better to post your question on the 5 series section and indicate which year and type it is , ie E34, E39. There are plenty of guys on there who should be able to help,  Good luck,  Steve.

Does it say brake light circuit failure at all? I know on a few 3 series (like my E36) if u start the car with ur foot on the brake - ping - the check control starts flashing that ur brakes according to that aren't working, but in fact they are. I'm not sure if its something to do with a switch of somekind on the brake pedal or under it (i dunno where exactly it is). If u switch the car off and let it clear n start again without foot onthe brake the message doesn't come up. Also someone else told me that if it comes up to stamp on the brake pedal hard and it should clear - but i've never tried that cos i just turn it off.

Dunno if that helps or not. Maybe try it and see if it'll clear.
