Yikes... will the clutch not hook up at all? Slipping the clutch like that will make it so bad that it won't be drivable. Once that happens it is a PITA.

Economy run. Thats sounds like good fun. Driving around like a granny.
Might let my granny drive my car then, so I can win. Can I use my brother-
in-laws 5.7 litre V8 Dodge Ram? (12MPG normally, 2.6 GPM driving fast)

They are good fun in fairness.
I have done a few now and think my first was the best (in my old E30). With no navigator I had to follow the directions and drive at the smae time and still managed to win a prize (for being fastest )!

There is usually a break for lunch with something car related thrown in (no pressure Diarmuid)

Hi guys,

I might run in this depending on the date. I ran a few Economy runs when I was in the MG car club. So it would be a nice change to run in it instead of sitting out in the country with a clip board.

Any dates yet?

As noted in the Irish region news BMW Car Club Magazine April 2006

"Mid West Tour May 21st 11am at Killaloe in Co. Clare is the kick off for a planned tour of the area. An optional economy competition may be held. Contact Gerard O'Connor on 086 2659211 or Diarmuid Mallon for more details."

More Details: The Meeting point at 11am is in Ballina Co. Tipperary (don't panic! not really a change of start, meeting point is just the other side of the bridge over the river Shannon.) If you come up from the N7 into Ballina/Killaloe Turn into the car park on the left, sign posted Swimming Pool, just after the 50km/h sign.

The route is about 90miles doing a full circle of Lough Derg with a lunch halt just after half way. There is plenty of spectacular scenery on the route. All roads are good secondary roads, no back roads

As well as the Economy Competition, there will also be a few Treasure Hunt type questions throw in.

Please note 11am is the time for first car on the route. Please be there in good time to allow for documentation and tank filling.

Looking forward to seeing you all.

2 hours from Frank Keane's, so no excuses for all you city boys not travelling down!  In Kin's case, bearing in mind his recent brushes with the law, allow 2.5 hours!

While we had a low turnout for this event last year it was an enjoyable day.  The format on the day will combine the treasure hunt, economy run and as such is more challenging than you would think.  It also includes reasonably challenging route notes and requires maintaining as close as possible to the calculated journey time and average speed.

There is a handicap system that will even out the difference of engine size, etc. between cars.  If I recall correctly it meant that a '03 M3 nearly beat an e36 318iS in the results and Adrian romped home in his 523i.

As Ger said, the first car will leave at 11:00 on the day, so if people could aim to gather by 10:30 to sign in and get their instructions, etc. it would be great.

For those who don't know the area, Ballina is the Tipperary side of the town of Killaloe at the southern end of Lough Derg on the Shannon.  The meeting point is the car park on the way in to Ballina from the N7.  It is on the left hand side just inside the 50kph zone (note to Kin!!).  If you pass a pub called Goosers (on the right hand side) you have gone a little too far.

There will be a lunch stop in Portumna at the end of the outward leg and the finishing point is the same carpark we will be starting from.

Let me know if you can make it and I will be able to pass on more explicit directions, etc. as needed.

Travel towards Limerick onthe dual carriageway and take the exit for Sixmilebridge.  At junction in Sixmilebridge, cross straight across and follow signs for Clonlara/Killaloe.  This road goes across the hills (you will cross over a few junctions on the way) and brings you eventually on to the back road from Ardnacrusha to Killaloe at Clonlara.

hi all,
Newish site member, long time admirer  of same, and BMW driver for 10 years, should be club member tomorrow by phone. Enjoyed 'observor' status and day out at recent Mondello gig (and previous event).
As current 'mama' to Dergside's 91 TN 2305, hope to remind the old girl of previous stomping ground around Lough Derg on May 21  by joining in the romp around the water.
Have retired E21 316 to good home of Wexford club member, and seeking  E30 Happy's auto 316i box (when he changes over to manual), or similar,  for out-of-sorts E30 316I auto '89.
Missed out on  Irish reg 320is earlier this year with deal struck! Brother just sold on his E30 318is for buttons without a whisper to moi!. You win some, you lose more.  Keep the faith and stay calm. K

Andrew - welcome to the brave new world of broadband!  Looking forward to catching up on Sunday.  I won't have the current e36 to show you (Mrs D will have it for the weekend while I'm getting a small oil weep sorted on hers) but have a loaner at the moment that is interesting - hopefully the sun shines for it.  Will James be able to join us this time?

Nigel - ask Andrew, a little local knowledge can be a dangerous thing!  Thanks for the offer, may well take you up on it.  If you aren't in work on Friday, maybe you'd PM your phone number?  I'll give you a call on Saturday.

5 * 18 year olds may be sufficient handicap all by itself!  There is a time element to consider too!

Not if the 18 year olds are Female, Bikini'd and preferably pretty.

Sorry guys. I can't go. Have to work on Sunday 'coz I need to take
tomorrow off to bring Pamela's stupid horse to the stupid vets to get a
stupid test done before it can be sold. I HATE horses. It would be cheaper to
kill the damn thing. I was really looking forward to the trip as well. Once
again I'm sorry. Hope you all have fun.

Bad weather all right. Still would have liked to go. Only 2 customers came
into the shop all day. I used to drive a yellow Kangoo just like that one in the
pic. Those were the days.

Firstly, a big thanks to the folks that made it to Ballina/Killaloe.  It was a horrible day and in the circumstances the turnout of 5 cars to take part was excellent.

A few of the guys have already identified themselves here but the list of participants was:

Richard31 - travelled from Limerick

Ben O'Brien - travelled from Newmarket on Fergus

Digweed - travelled from Ennis

Andybmk - travelled from Adare

Paddy_d2k2 - travelled from Maynooth (big thanks for that, especially because of the weather!).

NN_DD joined us in Ballina before the set-off and again at the end.  Daxklynsmith joined us for lunch in Portumna (it should have been my first time to meet Dax but by pure chance we swapped parking spaces in John Roches garage in Gort yesterday).

Will get the results up here later, but in the meantime thanks again to all for making the effort.  It was great to meet a few more club members and swap petrolhead type experiences.  The link below will take you to a few photo's I took, the weather didn't encourage me to stand out and take more
