I'm curious about this.

My e46 323ci auto gets (on average) 250miles to a tank of Petrol. That's not doing long journeys, but also not doing daily city traffic (Dublin).

I'd like to know what other people get from their respective cars, for future economising. (Just call me Eddie Hobbs.)  In particular, any e46 320ci's, and of course, any M3's.

e39 520 350 urban, about 500 rural.

To quote a friend, "if you can't afford the petrol, don't buy the car!!!"

How big is the tank? Mine is 51 litres and I get 250-290 miles per tank. Don't usualy go right down to empty. Its doing a steady 29.5 MPG at the minute, which I'm happy enough with.

On my 523i I just sneaked over 600 miles for the most recent tank (miles from fill plus remaining range according to the obc).  This was pretty much exclusively long runs on the open road with no big snarl ups, etc.  I think the e39 tank is around 70 litres.

65 litre tank.

Around town (Dublin) the absolute, absolute best I will do is 200 miles to a tank but I do a lot of daily stop start driving.

On long runs, I can achieve as high as 28mpg (this would be 6th gear long distance cruising) but generally 24-25 mpg is the best you could achieve.  I was in Westport for a week last week and clocked up 800-900 miles doing virtually no town driving and got an average of 24.6 mpg for the week.

In summary, if you are worried about fuel, do not buy an M3.

I'm sure Kin will come in now and trounce me though :)

eh, i need a 2L so! I know i'm a bit fond of the phun pedal but the 2L's are kicking ass on motorway economy:

Urban only: 320 ish
Motorway only (france with a VERY full car): 460 best

Thought i could sicken everone here with this but not quite, my 525 diesel does on average 470-80 miles to a tank but i have seen 560 out of it but that was driving like a snail, steady 55mph on long journeys. Urban it is terrible, my daily commute involves going through limerick at 8.30am and although ive never done a tank purely in urban i would expect to half the rural range.

My 523i with upgrade to 202bhp, 70 litre tank but would always fill it up with approx 8-10 litres left, so 62 litres does 420 miles with combination of urban and rural driving. I have achieved 500 going light on the load pedal and with more long distance driving. On a long run back from Cork one time I kept it steady 60 -70 and achieved 42mpg, so if I did that continuously on a full tank then almost 650 miles could be done before spluttering to a halt.

i average between 350 and 450 miles per tank, that being a mix of daily driving around cork and a couple of jaunts to dublin

incidently i did manage a very handy 8.7mpg on my first ring visit

70L tank, I get at most 170miles and I dare not go anymore for the risk of running out of fuel. All city driving.

I avg 12.3MPG since I owned the car.

Once I got it up to 23mpg. That is by resetting the counter when I come onto the motorway and then reading the avg as I get off.

The way this car drinks petrol and engine oil you would think it was designed by the Saudis.

I'm sure they're the ones egging BMW and Mercedes to keep putting out these gas guzzling performance cars. Just reading about the new S65 AMG. Twin Turbo V12. 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. Its a bloody LIMO. People only buy them because they're more expensive, not because they want to drive it fast.

525 e39 with 70L tank, i get about 450 miles to the tank.  they're mostly country runs.  going up to mondello managed to get 34.6mpg, very happy with that (did 70mls on the track at 11.7mpg, happy with that too!!! ), usually average about the 28-30 mark.  i've stopped filling it to the top now, i just buy 30L without looking at the price either, and it does me for most of the week.

Those numbers are mind-boggling Kin!!!!!!!!!!!

The E36 is averaging 25mpg since I got it. Long driving will get an indicated 31mpg out of it, but checking the tank properly shows it's nearer 29-29.5mpg. Generally I find the computer gives 1-1.5mpg too generous a reading. So I get 300-400miles from a tank depending. the 6th gear from the Evo would make a big difference - 5th feels very low come 60-70mph steady state driving.

E38 735!

I wish I was mad over there then! 93.9p is a very good price here in Edinburgh but I've seen it as high as 97.9p.

I really feel for the guys way up north, its normally a good 10 - 15p more

Here's a good one. Nissan Patrol. 95 litre tank = €110 to fill from empty.  Don't know how far a tank will get me coz I can't afford to fill it. Even if I could afford it I wouldn't coz it takes so bloody long. Anyway does about 26.5 MPG. Good for an Auto.

530d was doing 34.5 MPG but is in with the dealer being fixed at the moment. It was never running right at all . Expect about 45 MPG when I get it back.

I was pretty anal about calculating my MPG when I first got the car.

Lowest = 22.6

Highest = 30.84 (Dublin to Galway and back and a bit of rural driving while on holliers in Galway)

When I realised how much more petrol I was using than in my 45mpg Seat Leon I got too depressed and stopped keeping tabs. Still in the habit of resetting the trip counter at every fill though. I tend to fill up within about 10 - 20 miles of the light coming on and generally get 300 to 320 miles to a fill doing a mix of short motorway trips to work and a bit of town driving.

I thought it was bad. Now I'm just glad there's no M in my model number! The way prices are going I may have to forego my beloved auto box and get a 320d.

I find since i started sticking to the speed limits (being pulled 3 times since i got my beemer ) i've been getting better economy (only having to fill once every two weeks instead of once a week). It certainly makes a difference, oh yeah and not letting my brother drive my car helps too hehe!!

as i said earlier i only put in 30L at a time so last week i did a wee experiment.  30L in on monday 175 miles mostly town driving, thursday another 30L this time mostly country driving (it included a long run from ennis to athlone and back to galway), 245 miles with an avg. mpg of 33.4.  put another 30L in today and did a journey of 37 miles (home to ennis) got 38.1 mpg.  happy enough with that so i am.

2001 E39 520i (2.2l) Auto, - still didn't change it evn after all the looking.
Averages around 360 per fill around city, long runs 450+ or so.  Herself drives it 95% of the time but I get 3/4 mpg more on the OBC than she does, so I'd say driving style has a big impact.

The 96 M3 Evo, on M50 rush hour was doing around 28mpg if I remember right, its embarassing oilburner replacement on the same run is doing 55mpg, its not a BM so I'll hang my head in shame.

Lol you held off for as long as you could didnt you

Hehe yes I had 2 spins at the vip day, both at turn 20 on the back of the international.  Although at least I have an excuse, on the first one, my wife called me half way through a lap complaining her new PIN wasn't working for her atm card , bloody bluetooth lol.  I got a bit distracted during the conversation and tried to change down from 3rd to 2nd in the middle of a 90 degree right hander that I was carrying too much speed into anyway

Second time was at the end of the day and I had complete brake failure coming up to the same turn and kind of panicked .  I knew the brakes wouldnt last the day (AL had told me I would be lucky to get a day out of the pads) and the warning light came on during the last session (I'm not sure if it was the pads or just general brake fade though).

Incidentally, Kin, I have just been watching teh vid of your second spin at mondello, and by god its a doozy.  It will take some matching for sheer heart stopping wall proximity and general all-over-the-trackness coverage with windscreen wipers to boot

Mick
