Just reading the Irish Times yesterday, Μnsurance is at it lowest price in years. Are any of you still paying huge premiums?

I changed my ploicy  on my Patrol from AXA in January to XS-Direct. AXA quoted me €3150 (with 4 years no claims). XS quoted €1050 for the same policy. They work on a very high excess in case of a claim. Boys have to pay the first €4000 of every claim, girls pay the first €2000. It's still the best option for me.

Who are you guys with?

B.T.W. I was checking quotes for a 1994 M3 and the best so far is €1,200 with €350 excess from Brittons. St Pauls were looking for €1,400 with no excess. Brittons (XS) were quoting €800 with excess of €4000, but I couldn't take that risk.

Hibernian-direct... cheapest if you're married as far as i can see, they seem to be the only one that has only a tiny loading for a spouse.

Our insurance is up for renewal in June and will be about 520 fully comp with protected NCD (5 years no claims) on the 316.

Thats very good for AXA. I know they have other nice benifits. They told me they don't normally quote for high value/performance cars. Sister-in-law was quoted €2300 for an SLK 230 with them. Went to Hibernian and got it for €1400. She was 27. She's now paying €825 on a 2.5 Boxster.

'97 523i - €580 on renewal last week - can't recall which company (broker did the biz), fully comp, no points, full protected ncb.  '93 325i coupe approx €700 in January, 4 years ncb (started as a new policy 4 years ago), fully comp, protected, etc.

Between renewals on these I turned 40, that seems to have made a bit of a difference as the renewal on the 523i last year was closer to €700.

llatsni - you shouldn't be loaded for a spouse; most companies give a discount for having you partner (married or unmarried) on the policy, regardless of provisional or full license.

Sure give you a laugh... I'm 29... full NCD... it was cheaper to include my wife on the policy despite the fact she was on her first provisional with 1 years no claims on the 325Ci!! Mine is around the 1,100 mark as far as i remember... full no claims protection, open drive, windscreen, yada yada... cup of tea if you break down etc. etc.

So me driving the car on my own is more risky than her driving it also.... insurance companies!!

33 3/4, something like 12 years claims free (i.e. full NCB) and Im paying something like 600 on my 523i with the missus named using the AA (can't remember underwriting company).
What I have found is that if you ring the AA and ask them if the quoted price is their cheapest, it usually isn't!

41, E39 530d 2000, 840 euro, Full no claims with FBD.Wife as named driver.I think you may have to have your house insured with them as well but i found them cheapest in that sector as well.

Always annoys me about the way brokers can knock a lot of dosh of their original Quotes. A lot of people especially older ones just pay the quote they get in the post. I know i have to go searching for my mother otherwise shed just pay what shes quoted, too quiet to haggle.

29years old when I took out the policy last August, E30 M3, fully comp with protected 4.5years NCB, with FBD, It cost me a hefty €2,000

I could'nt get a quote last August on my E30 M3, as I only had classic car policies for 4 years which dont count when your getting normal car insurance and I have been on fleet insurance since I was a little lad

Our company were going to insure the M3 on the fleet policy for free, but I had to get my own policy some day so I went to FBD our insurance company which we have been with for 4.5 years, and they gave me the above quote after we told them we were not happy with the other personal quotes they give me first

They told me after 1 full year with them I will have a fully protected NCB and it should come down alot, if not I will take my full NCB they give me and shop around.

just got my quote this week.  they're looking for a grand for the bm.  had forgot to tel them that i'd moved out of dublin when i did it took nearly 300 off the quote!!!

another thing i'd like to know is how they can give you a 70% ncd???  70% of what???  it's very easy to come up with a hig figure and then say we're giving you 70% off, if they dont tell you the figure in the first place.

Quinn Direct must do as that' s what they're offering!

Anyway I think that the AA wins out with €480. Funny that their
policy is underwritten by AXA who weren't near the final price!

Anyhow I believe that they have settled claims against innocent policyholders just to avoid legal messes.

I was so happy with those initial prices that I really didn't go into

I'm 27 with a policy in my own name and a full NCB since 17.

I changed from AXA through a broker to Hibernian Direct about 3 years ago. Since then I've had a few cars and the costs have as follows:

E46 318ci (2003-2004) €980

E46 M3 (2004 - 2005) € 1,600 to €1,500 (when I got married I got a €100 refund!)

X5 3.0i Sport (2005-2006) € 1,020

E90 330d Sport (2006) €1,400 approx

I've found their quotes to be the most competitive every year and on every car during the renewals.

Currently: E90 330d Sport

I paid 850 euro on my last car, '99 316i coupe fully comp. Upgraded to a '02 325 Ci sport last week, and cost me an extra 290 euro 'til september. Im 24 with 3 yrs NCD and with Hibernian.  I put my girlfriend on the policy while her car was 'sick' and it actually went down by 150 euros!!

Man that bites...
I'm drivin' a '92 520i - totally standard. I'm 26, five years NCB, the car sleeps off the road on private property in Limerick County (joking aside, it's a very low risk area), I generally don't act the maggot on the road, never had penalty points and Hibernian are charging me €1100 for third party fire and theft. And the sad thing is, Hibernian is the cheapest. It's like they just pull a random number out of the air. I'm being ****** over and there's nothing I can do about it!

Jimbo, did you go through a broker or go direct to Hibernian?

I went to Hibernian direct. Like you said-they are the cheapest I could find. I rand a broker at the time and the lowest quote they gave me was from Hibernian-but it was still more expensive than what I was quoted direct. LOL

How do you get the quotes in the surrounding box in a reply?

Just click the quote button in the top right corner of the post you want to quote!

I'm from Adare.
Just noticed you are in Ennis - you should call out to Ballyvaughan tomorrow if you are stuck for something to do, there is a hillclimb on at the Cork Screw - ledgendary bit of tarmac! There will be a pretty unique collection of cars there.

Welcome!

It's not a BMWCC related event... the Sunday hill The Scalp in Carron (I think that's how it's spelled). A good hill for spectators I believe!

Dunno about meets - I haven't been here in a while! Some of the lads should be able to fill you in- keep an eye out for Fey! and Dergside. Of course there is one important meet coming up in October - Mondello!

Not sure about the rest of the motorsport calender, but the Galway National Rally (Summer Stages) is on at the end of August.  It's a one day event on a Sunday (the 27th, I think).

Anyone who wants to go marshalling at it can give me a call........

Paying €490 TPF&T for a 96 328i with Quinn Direct at the moment. Was able to add a friend of mine onto the policy for free as well which was handy. Full no-claims bonus & aged 37.

Thanks for the welcome

Given it's only TPF&T I'm not too worried to be honest, the old bus wouldn't be worth a huge amount in any case with 130K miles on the clock.

My insurance is up on Thursday. Here's what happened over the last week............

Renewal form sent out automatically  ( Eagle Star through a pervious employment scheme) which was €584.00.

Did an online quote with Hibernian ( our house insurers )  €355.00

Rang back group scheme about their qutoe only to be told that the quote of 584 was from the current insurer but that they had gone and found a better quote with a different insurer for €341.00. They said that they sent a letter but nothing recieved from them.

Rang Hibernian and asked for a reduction due to having house insurance with them. Down to €328.00.

Then realised that herself was on the Hibernian quote as a named driver so rang back to group scheme to add girlfriend to policy and the new total is now €309.00.

Will be going with that quote. Very happy. Pay via laser, no direct debits.

Tell me about it. 313 Euro every three months for the Patrol, and 200 Euro
every three months for the Z3. (no wonder I can't afford a house)

Hi I'm new here, but have been reading these pages for a while.

I eventually after three years in the planning got my first car last week.

It's a BMW 316 Auto SE 1997 R Reg 1595cc, I bought it in London for £3,800. I have yet to pay the VRT but plan to do that next week. Interesting thread regarding insurance. I am 19 and on a provisional but will apply for my test soon with a bogus letter from an employer to speed things up a bit. I plan to be put on as a named driver with my father as the main driver, He's in his fifties and has a clean license for over 30yrs so there should be no problems for him.

I intend to take my test in the Auto as I absolutely hate manuals, i have taken lessons in them in a Toyota and nearly crashed in my lesson. I am constantly being pressured from all sides to take a manual test, what is the point when I can't drive one and will end up failing the test then because of it. My life plan is to immigrate out of here to the USA so as anyone who has been there will tell you manuals are rare there, (smart people).

Has anyone here been in my situation with a BMW at my age I'd really like to know as it would help me make the right choice. My parents who bought me the car are now holding me ransom and are forcing me to drive my sisters crappy Toyota (as she is gone away for the summer to the USA) and have this raving idea that I should drive that and get a manual license first.

Interesting first post huh?

Just recieved my renewal in the post from 123.ie. €1919 fully comp with all the fun stuff with Eagle Star. €1337 with XS as well was quoted as the cheapest.

27 years old with 3 years NCB. You know the car...

Will give a few places a call to see if I can get it any lower. If not I will stick with Eagle Star.

@Kin: Sounds like a very good quote to me. In general it seems like
everyones insurance is pretty reasonable.

@netwhizkid: Doing your test in an auto sounds easy, but you have to be
able to use it properly. Not like the way you see people drivng with them.
You will need lessons in an auto to pass. And what kind or big girls blouse
are you anyway? If you do your test in an auto then you have major
restrictions. What if you get the oppertunity to drive a really nice car? (it
happens). You can't. What if you have to borrow a manual car? You can't.
And if you think you'll be able to do you test again in a few years, think
again. It's not set up that way. And lots of cars in the states are 'sticks'. Grow
up. Take some lessons and do the test in a manual.

@netwhizkid:

Give the manuals a try first, keep at it, the saying practice makes perfect didnt come from nowhere.

As for being in the same boat re. insurance, yes i am, im 17 on a provisional nearing then end of my first year and just turning 18, i have a 525td and its insured under my mothers name for around the 3k mark, a 316i with a slushbox will be much much cheaper to insure, im with hibernian through a broker, although i have just transfered my insurance over on to my Volvo 850 T5-R for the summer i will be renewing again on the bmw at the start of august.

I think your parents are right you should try driving the manual toyota first and get the hang of it, you'll appreciate your bm more when you start driving it, plus once you have the manual license you can drive anything, so to speak.

Regards

Ben
