Ok, not too knowledgeable on this one, so here goes. I was having overheating problems, so I had someone look at it who informed me the viscious (if thats how its spelt) coupling had gone, but rather than replace it, it appears my fan is now connected directly to the cam, so as my rpm increases, so does the fan. now while this has solved the overheating problem, I'm worried this could cause future damage. Any Ideas ? Oh, with the bonnet up, it also screetches when you rev it hard. |

| Best to get the fan fixed as runnning with th fan on all the time will cause the engine to be run at less than optimum temperature, which will not only increase fuel usage but can cuase the mayonaise type stuff indicative of a head gasket. |

Many Thanks for your reply. The squeeling noise I hear at high revs, is this due to the fan being fixed and running at the same speed as the engine? I've also noticed a slight drop in performance.

squealing ?? Hi mate it most likely be the fan belt or the bearing in the fan breaking up you can get a replacement from GSF or EURO or even E bay they are not to dear of course you could do away with the viscous fan and replace it with a kenlowe unit that will optimize performance

Did I mention that when its idleing, it sounds almost as if its rattling too. Note to self, never let dodgy mechanics bodge your car to get it through its MOT. |

My old car's fan used to rattle, but that was a noisy viscous coupling, so it won't be that!! Running the fan directly off engine rpm cant be good. Get it sorted pronto! The viscous coupling itself only costs about £30 from memory... (for my old 316) |

| I'm going to see the guy tomorrow to bollock him and get him to sort it out, as you say, it can't be good to have the fan hooked up to run at the same rpm as the engine. I think the guy knocked me on the cost of parts too. £230 for a fan coupling, hose that comes out of the air flow meter, front pads, fuel line, power steering hose, oh, and a steering rack. Is that expensive do you think ? |

| Was that just for parts? If it was a new steering rack it doesn't sound too bad but possbly a bit pricy if it was second hand |
