Anyone know what modern(ish) engine fits into E9, with least amount of
tinkering, as I want to rebuild mine over the next year but keep the car running? Thanks Richard |

-other M30s will fit (think E12, E28, E24, E34, E32 etc 2.8 to 3.5l cars), BUT engine mounts, exhaust flanges, and camshaft drives (to name but few) vary considerably, as well as the obvious stuff like t.stat housings and the like. My guess would be an L-jet engine ( most E12s,E28 2.8s etc) would be the next best thing after a direct swap for an E9 engine, but I'm willing to bet someone knows better than I do. BTW total BMW did an M30 engine feature a couple of months ago, worth a look. cheers

Hi Dickie http://www.e9coupe.com - www.e9coupe.com technical sections has a whole lot of Info. Brucey is correct in saying that there are engine mount differences but your best bet is the E28 535, E24 prior to 86 I gather.Anyway, there is a wealth of info on that and also http://www.seniorsixregistry.com - www.seniorsixregistry.com When are you going to post some pics?? I would agree with the above, but would recomend an engine from an e12 5 series M535i or E24 six series post 1982. You can go with a these and they will bolt in fairly easily with almost no modification required as the E12 and CS chassi is basically the same. However if you are clever enough you can fit alomst anything into a car. Thanks for all the tips fellows, most appreciated. My next door neighbour
has an M535i so I shall wait for it to get dark and perform minor surgery. Thanks for the e9coupe.com site tip Dax, spent too long on it last night, luckily I have an understanding wife. So understanding in fact that she has said I don't have to sell the car when we have our first child due in August. Result, just don't tell the in-laws. Am trying to figure out how to put some images of the motor but am having tech difficulties. Thaks again Dickie |

2285188 A delightful part of East London known as Hackney (apparently it's on the up Olympics and all that). Had it about 5 years and need to make it run better, vacumn problem I think. Will put some images up tomorrow if I can figure out which finger I use to turn the computer on. Best Dickie |

Hi Dickie,Baby seats go well with an E9 such as the CSL, it already has the seat belt mounting holes installed and as it does'nt have airbags,definitely safer for baby! Dickie, Long time no speak. Congratulations on the nipper news, and even more congratulations that you can keep the car (!). Echo comments re baby seats in an E9. I dragged both my children round in mine when they were in baby seats and then boosters. The back seats are then perfect for "small people" (my son is 10 and my daughter is 7). As others have said there are a whole load of M30s that will fit with varying degrees of hassle into your car. It's a shame you can't pinpoint the running problem before you start chopping and changing though. Either way, keeping the car running is a must, otherwise life takes over, and before you know it, the car will have been off the road for years and be beyond it. Good luck, and don't forget people are willing to help where they can.

How you doing? Began the removal process this weekend (the easy part) fingers crossed. My engine has never run correctly so nows the time to do something about it. Have located an E28 M535i so watch this space. Cheers Dickie |

An even better idea? Forget the old 3003cc engine
you have. I would rebuild a Motronic 3.2 engine (732i), convert it to a distributor, fit this and store the old CSL engine away somewhere. Use the old D Jet from the CSL but you could probably raise the fuel pressure a bit. The 3210cc engine was really sweet but you might struggle to find one these days. I threw away a prefect 732i short engine with absolutely zero bore wear because nobody wanted it. AAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!

M535i purchased yeterday with an engine that feels as strong as an ox.
My neighbour drove me down in his red 535i so returning to town in a convoy with two faded red M535i's travelling at high velocity must have looked quite a sight. Dog leg 5 speed as well so fingers crossed that will fit. Watch this space, images to come. May the force be with me. Small question: My hanes bible says that on the E9 you cannot take the engine out with the gearbox still attached, is this true or will they come out together?? Cheers Dickie |

Difficult. Almost better to make some kind of a sling arrangement and lift the shell itself from the chassis legs and separate it from the subframe here and at the strutt tops. With water, petrol, guibo, exhaust & electricals disconnected you get the engine and gearbox mounted on the subframe too, and literally lift the car off it. If you are planning to rebuild the motor anyway though, I'd take the head off and the gearbox. You have just the three averagely heavy lumps to deal with then, rather than one enormously heavy one.
