The forums host disappeared for a few days and seems to have resurfaced so the site is back online.
Thankfully, I back up data frequently so even if they went kaput totally then we would have not lost much.
I will move the forum to another server soon enough anyway to ensure more stability and speed but at least I will be in control of that situation and can minimise downtime.

I was lucky enough having had backups - other webmasters out there seem to have lost clients because of the farce! See http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=517741" id="thread_title_517741 - Blazernetwork Down

Database Backups were done every 2 or 3 days and each involves downloading about 250-300MB.
Website files are backed up every month as the only things that change really are users file uploads. These are about 650MB.
Thank the Gods for broadband!

Killian,

I cant belive they alowed all of there servers go down with no redundency... It makes no sence for a web hosting service. Where are these guys based? Its one thing letting a fourm go down for a couple of days but what of their other customers????

This sort of outage should be a thing of the past.

Are you going to move hosting or is it your call?

Mick

Mick - there was some bull answer on a forum about having to replace servers etc, but i can't see why a backup of their sites could not have been used.
I am keeping my eyes peeled for a reputable host that will provide us with enough disk and database space for the forums needs. Currently the mail and www servers are running. However, the ftp server is still down and I want to get any recent uploads by members. However, (fingers crossed) I reckon that the service will be back in a day or so.

Rhys - I believe that Nigel was the one who jinxed the host!

It only got going about 10 or 11 last night. The database was up and running yesterday afternoon but it wouldn't allow inserts or updates so i had to create duplicate tables and then copy all the data - not an easy task when the host (who I know and trust) don't provide direct access to the database (a security feature)

I plan on upgrading the hosting to a dedicated account where we 'own' the server, (no pain involved!) soon and this will be quite costly.

No idea of prices of these things so what sort of costly?  Where would the money come from. Are we looking at a couple of quid donations each from say a couple of thousand regular forum users or more serious money.

The clicks the adverts collect should pay for the hosting when it happens - I wouldn't ask people to fork out for something unnecessarily

I'm sure you wouldn't Killian but if it were required I believe there are plenty on the forum including myself, who would get their hands in their pockets to help out. This is a great forum on which I spend several hours a week. Through it I've had good advice, good debate, humourous entertainment met some good folks and so far all for nothing. Thats pretty good value I'd say.

Just make sure there won't be any of those F**king pop-ups. And I don't
think anyone here will be joining that Int'n pet owners club. Some of the car
related ads might be of some use though. I'm serious about the pop-ups. I'll
send a team of heavies to your house. I swear. I will. I mean it. I will.

Lovin' the new signature. Where did you go?

1. There will never, ever, ever be any pop ups! Ever!
2. What Int'n pet owners club?
3. I went back to 1984 to warn someone about the impending rise of the machines and the war of self aware machines against mankind. Was kind of fun!

On at least 3 occasions, it has been unable to fully load the page and then it tries to connect to my 56k modem - I am connected via Broadband.

So, Killian, we can click the clickies if we want, but you say you can't say that we should click the clickies so you say we shouldn't?

Is that about right?

BTW, excellent work, as usual, on the forum.

er, I think so!
Im saying that I do not encourage the clicking of links purely to raise money. Click them if you think the link may help you or whatever.
the amount of money raised is dependant on the advertiser so 1 click may raise 1p or £3 - you never know.
However, the IP address, etc. of the clicker is recorded by Mr. Google and if it shows repeated clicks by the same IP then suspicions will be raised.
