From what I can gather the Auto transmission is supposed to be sealed for the life of the car ie never needs the trans fluid changing. Looking at the ETK it appears that there are procedures for changing the filter/oil on repair.

After 117K I cannot believe that the oil in my transmission is as good as new. Even if the filter has been changed out regularly. Over time the oil will become contaminated and will cease to have optimum properties which can only be detrimental to the AT.

Has anyone had the oil changed on their AT? I am going to ask BM to do it at my next pit stop.

There was a peice on this in Total BMW a while back. I'll have a look and dig it out.

Thanks Ian. Looking at the CD's it does not look like a onerous procedure. Interested to find out whether or not a BMW mech thinks it should be done or not.

Phil - You've got to consider what 'the life of the car' is?

There is a mumoured rumour that cars were only ever built to do 100,000 miles.

So I would advise changing the fluid, it can only ever make the car better!

Good luck, whatever you decide 2 do,

Pikey

117K is only half of the mileage I'm expecting from it. I cannot consider changing it for anything but another!!!

I've got inspection I coming up after my next spell at work. Going to get my independent to do it at the same time.(I'll get them to confirm that the warranty people have no objection to it)

I had mine changed by BMW at 67'000 miles. It's sealed for life, but I asked them to change the oil and they did it.
