Took my E34 540 to the garage today, to have a service all went well, and my guess at the rocker gaskets leaking was bang on!  In fact, all 8 plug holes were full of oil as they have been leaking so bad.  Got two kits from the dealer (£40+vat for the pair) and will get them put on.

The lower control arm bushes have been replaced according to the mechanic, so i guess it is the steering box that is kaput.  People tell me these boxes do serios milage before wearing out, mines done 200k so is that enough to wear it out.  I might be able to adjust the box, as the garage said it has an adjuster.  How does this work ?????

Anyway, see how it goes.

You can adjust the steering box but it may be a bit tricky on your 540!
Mine was sloppy at 189k, so I fixed it, now I'm at 204k with no probs. The adjuster is on the top of the box (allen key needed if I remember right). Slacken the outer locknut off, jack the front up, screw in the adjuster until you have dialled out the 'play' at the steering wheel (DON'T OVERTIGHTEN IT OR YOU WON"T BE ABLE TO STEER AT ALL!). When you are happy with your adjustment keep the adjuster key steady while carefully tightening the outer locknut. Test drive and repeat until perfect.

HTH,

Shaun
