Whenever I come to Ireland, I always get lost, so I thought that I would get a map for my TomTom satelite navigator, only to find that they don't do one. Has anyone got a map that will work in tomtom navigator 5 or does one not exist? They cover the rest of Europe, so why not Ireland?

Howard

I am surprised that you cant find one because tomtom units are sold over here in most auto stores.  That said, the coverage is poor at the moment with really only the major cities and arteries covered.  navteq based systems should have full mapping in January 07 however with the release of v9 of their maps.

Thanks for that Mick - I may try and get a map while I am in Ireland.
If not, I will have one for my next visit.

Thanks - that is in the new issue maps just out. Your message prompted me to load the UK Plus map and where I found a very small section of Ireland including some of Dublin.
Many thanks

The housing estate where I live 25 miles from Dublin is in the Tom Tom my neighbour bought recently. I will talk to him to see what version he has.

Got the answer from TomTom - follows:

Thank you for your question regarding TomTom Maps of Ireland. TomTom is always investigating the possibility of adding new countries. TomTom will do so when the digital map data is of a satisfactory quality. At this moment there is very little road data. TomTom only wants to supply its customers with the highest quality possible. We will release the product for Ireland when Tele Atlas has enough coverage, e.g. 96%. Currently we have some map data of Ireland. This is including some areas of Cork, Dublin, and Galway along with the major roads data.

When we decide to include the Republic of Ireland we will announce this on the web site. May we ask you to please keep an eye on our website in the months to come?

Part of the problem facing sat nav map companies is the relativly small amount of customers (4.2 million people in Ireland) and also the fact that we don't have postcodes. There could be 20 places in the country with the same townland name which makes it hard to enter a destination into the nav unit because you would have to enter a county as well.
