I'm thinking of byeing a 6 have about 3k to spend on one, what do you think I coud get and what sort of condishion to be in.

For £3k, you could have a Highline that looks OK on the outside, plus cash left over to deal with the things you didn't see on the inside..... ...or you could have a presentable 1982-87 chrome-bumpered model -------------

Remember my car Mark? Theres an identical E12 based car on Autotrader at the moment that looks mint, and only £2195, so money left over to sort it out. Series 1 cars are always cheaper as far as I can see (often with good reason!) ------------- And so says Jimbob. 1981 635csi 81k miles. Will be fixed, but not by me. |

£3k will get you a Six but it will need some sorting. How much sorting depends on your expectations. Good condition sixes are around the £5k - £6k mark (or more) so bear that in mind when you're looking. As ever with a Six, bodywork is everything. Remember, wings are £500 each. Exhausts aren't cheap & interior trim is unique too. Your experience with your 7-series should stand you in good stead. If you're on a tight budget, consider a 628. They sell for a lot less than a 635, tend to be better looked after (easier life?) & in the real world they aren't much slower than a 3.5. Hi Mark I bought my six for exactly £3K on the nose almost a year ago and have been very pleased value-for-money wise. It's not perfect but I use it every day (6K miles so far) and it doesn't look to shabby at all (see below!) Money spent so far other than original purchase price: £195 new petrol tank (fitted), £105 Oil service, New rear axle bushes and tidying up handbrake for MOT £230, New upper and lower suspension arms, bushes and track rods £320, replace faulty starting relay £50. TOTAL £900 which i think is pretty good for a year's maintenance on an 18 year old motor. One thing's for sure: any new car over the same period would have depreciated by far more than this amount, and wouldn't have looked half as good on the trip to sainsburys Oh yeah and I spent £450 on some nice style 5 imperials to replace the dreaded metrics - essential item!!!! The first one looks very reasonable although you may have to budget for new wings if the old ones can't be repaired. The last one has the highest mileage although 162k shouldn't be a problem if it's been looked after. Being a Highline it's the most luxurious & (to me) desirable, but then I am biased. Consider how important that is to you as there are more things to go wrong (electric seats etc.). You really need to have a good look at the actual cars as bidding blind on a Six is likely to be costly. I'd be bidding for the second one, the 1982 car with the manual gearbox.
I bet it's got a limited slip diff as well and they really go well. It looks like a tidy car and for £1000-£1200 you can't go too far wrong. One day to go, get bidding! ------------- |
