Hi,

Just bought my first BMW Big Smile - a 1993 320iSE 113k miles and love it after only a week.  But it has started to make a noise similiar to you running your fingernails down the radiatorDisapprove (nothing is touching the radiator).  The noise is coming from the engine and is quite loud - I thought it was the exhaust baffles when it started but it is definately in the engine.  Don't feel any difference in the performance anyone recognise the noise or any ideas?

Have you checked nothing is touching the fan or it belts maybe?

Can be clicking injectors they are very noisy on the M20, tappets rattling away or the exhaust manifold gaskets can go making a funny noise similar to what you describe mate.

Thanks fellas,

had another look this morning and can't see anyting.  Started 'her' up and got the tinkling sound from around the right hand side of the engine - revved up to 3k for a few seconds and it reduced then stopped.  It seemed to be around the starter motor, could anything be catching in there?  I hope it's gone for good but I doubt it somehow.

Sun's out, car is polished, where are my shades....

About 15 minutes driving and it has come back, from outside it's almost like a sparking sound.  Garage here I come, anyone any experience of Lind in Maidstone/Aylesford?

Just to follow this up, the car went into Lind Maidstone and the noise is due to the bearings in the alternator failing.  The fan on the front can therfore move and sometimes touches the body of the alternator and hence the metallic tinkling sound.  £250 for a new one  - ouch!
