Having negotiated with a garage that has looked after my car for the last year a set of 850csi front brake calipers, discs and pads and been promised them. I rang them up yesterday to get them fitted to be told that they had sold them.  To make matters worse i offered to give them a deposite for them and they said that i didn't need to because they new me. Well currently i feel a little cheated and am very unhappy with said garage, infact let mme refraise that, just plane angry.

So my search for calipers continues and i was wondering if any of you 8 Series boys/girls have done any brake conversions on your cars and are now wanting to find a home for you old calipers. Currently I have managed to get hold of some 750i ones, but the 8 series ones are better. You may wonder why i want them, but it is to do a brake conversion on an old six, that can suffer from brake fade.

Any help most apreciated

Think you'll have a hard time getting 8 series calipers unless you buy new stuff.

Have you tried a brake specialist? They may be able to come up with something which suits that is not BMW if you really want to do something about the brake fade problem. Bird's and I guess other tuners will charge you a fortune for their upgrades (GBP 3.5K) I seem to remember for a complete front brakes upgrade.

Thanks for the feedback PhilC, Have not had any luck as yet. Looked into the AP Racing and Brembo options, and they seem to be silly money 2-3k. However buying new 840/850 4 pot calipers is £500 + vat alone and then you have discs and pads and fitting which is around 1k.  I will continue looking for about a month and then I will fit the 750 ones. My budget is £500. Total spent so far £70 for 750 master cylinder and £70 for second hand 750 calipers. Have had discs and pads prices up and it will cost another £140. All i need to do now is find another garage to fit them as i feel uninclined to go with the one mentioned above.

The search continues

God luck with your search. Let us know how you get on. I'm thinking about an upgrade to mine but not at Bird's prices.

I don't want to speak to soon, but i think i have some. They should arive on Monday from a Breakers in Bexley Heath. Had them for over a year. Still seem to be on target for my £500 Budget which is good.

What 8 series do you have PhilC, as the ones to try and get are those from an 850csi. The Discs are 20mm larger at 346mm, 2mm, wider at 32mm and the pistons on the four pot are more powerful. There is either that or the Brembo upgrade kit which can be purchased from the states for $2000. This gives slightly bigger discs, more powerful calipers and crossdrilled groved discs and competition pads. You will however need to change to 17" wheels.

I have an 840Ci. Standard 16" turbine style wheels. I guess I would need the wheels as well. $2000 ain't bad at all!!!

My calipers discs and pads arived this morning. Great . I think I have been lucky as the second hand discs and pads look brand new. The discs measure the correct width in mm of 30mm and the pads don't look like they have even been beddied in yet. One caliper looks like new and the other is slightly scratched on one side, but basically perfect.

I am now trying to get Total BMW to do a feature on my car and it's brake conversion as i thought it would make a good story. I will wait and see what they think. Then my next plan is to find a garage that would like to do the fitting gratis so as to get the free publicity. Everybody wins .

Fingers crossed.
