The garage that my fiancée bought her merc from as all second hand car dealer do, sprayed silicon on the tyre sidewalls to make them look shiny and black.  The only problem is that they have coated the alloys with the same stuff and I can't get it off the alloys.

I tried Autoglym wheel cleaner, then turps, then Autoglym tar remover and I only made a small improvements in removing it.

Can anyone suggest a method of removing this silicon from the alloys.

Andrew

It sounds like tyre dressing rather than regular silicon spray.. more like a varnish than a cosmetic shine.
I would have thought regular white spirit.. but you have tried that.. what about some cleaning clay?

I'll try the clay.  Very fine abrasive may work.
