Guys,

I'm looking for your opinions on events for next year. Here are some preliminary thoughts:

Mullingar meet, Dec-Jan
Rally school in Mk2 Escorts (Monaghan), February-March
Track day (Kirkistown???), April-May
East coast drive, May-June
Midlands run, possibly with an economy run too, June-July
Classic Car show, whatever the majority want (Trim, Terenure, etc.)
The Burren driving weekend, July-August
Track day (Mondello), September again
Show and Shine Concours, October

Any thoughts or volunteers to run the events?

BMW Head Office hasn't had a chance to get back to us as they have been too busy with the startup and the launch of the new 5 series. Hopefully we still do something with them.

Hows about leaving some space to come and visit the Scottish mob? We're planning a track day at Knockhill and will be publishing dates as soon as we get them from KH.

Does this sound of interest to you?

Typical!

The one weekend I'd be in Dublin and able to attend, and ye feckin' meet up in Athlone!

I have to be there too as the first grandchild in the family has been born. Satellite link-up perhaps?

You can take it for granted that I'll help organise / contribute in any way you see fit.. words mean bugger all though, so I'll endeavour to attend the next meeting!

Does anyone know if Kevin Barry still has his 3.0 CL for sale?

The proposed program is based on the proposed program Brendan posted originally. Killian has the details, but off the top of my head there will be a meeting in Mullingar early 2004, with events such as a track day, drives (the Burren, Wicklow, etc.) and a rolling road session.

ANy update on the rolling road?

Posted By: kbannon
Date Posted: 18-November-2003 at 20:13

OK Then;
Rolling Road / Basic Tech Training will be held in March 20th next in Enfield, Co. Meath @ Westward Precision Engineering.

Rolling Road:There will be space for 25 cars so provisionally book early with me ( mailto:bmw@kbannon.com - bmw@kbannon.com ).
Between setup etc. it will be 20-30 mins per car.
Tea & coffee will be provided AFAIK but you sort out your own lunch.
Prices will be approx €50 to 60 - I will confirm towards the date. Places will be strictly limited to BMWs and depending on numbers may be restricted to one car per BMWCCGB member.

Tech Training: To give people a slight understanding on car maintenance we hope to have a few BMW Specialists & experts on hand to show you the ins & outs of your motor, and given that there is no cost for this it is highly recommended.
If people have special requests (changing brake pads, etc.) on this topic please email me.

What is the rolling road?

Ravanelli

Ravanelli

The rolling road is where your care will be put on a set of rollers. The car is subjected to a number of conditions with the result showing the power output in printout form of your car i.e. determine the bhp and toruque of the car and see if the engine amangement system is running well.

It looks extremely likely that we will not be holding another Better Driving (Track) Day on a Saturday in Mondello Park in 2004 as their motorsport calenday is booked solid. They have early and late season dates but these will be running on rallycross prepared (& used) tracks and the weather is likely to be brutal
Would people be interested in a weekday event in Mondello (Friday?) or one in Kirkistown ( http://www.marshalspost.com/circuit/9.html - www.marshalspost.com/circuit/9.html ) next April (if it is available)? [the link contains sone excellent marshalling notes (these guys know the track v. well!)]

If more than 5 come back to me on one or the other within the next week (to give me an idea) then I'll book it.
K.

K,

The Scottish region are still planning a visit to http://www.knockhill.com - Knockhill in 2004. Provisional date is 9/10/04 - fuller details will be on the Scottish website as they are confirmed by Knockhill. Cost looks to be about £100.

We'd be delighted to see some of you folks over here if you could make it

Cheers,

Duncan

Dunno about Kirkistown. Everyone will have to drive up their car, go out on track and then drive home. Kirkistown is a fair auld spin - 3+ hour drive for everyone.

The Friday in Mondello will be OK for me but will it be OK for everyone else??

COme on lads!!

I'm well on for a weekday Better Driving Day - definitely count me in, Killian.

Actually, a lash off a greasy circuit with the rain bucketing down sounds like a bit of a giggle too, but I'd probably end up thumbing a lift back to Cork.

A weekday session may also mean we can get use of the full international circuit, as demand on the driving school would be less?

Kirikstown sounds like a big effort - I would have to make a weekend of it with the missus.....then... ...then  ...then

Hiya Crispin, saw you on the N4 the other day.

A Friday afternoon would be a possibility for me - but I would be very concerned that we could not make 30 people up - so Mondello would have to half their price!

I'd consider Kirkistown now that the M1 is built - I wonder of Mark up north is around the forum and who could look into this?

Thanks Eamo,

World cup was great - obvoiusly dissapointed by the final result, but cannot compain about the quality of the final matches.

The only problem now is that the trip cost me so much money, all my plans for the Bavarian Beauty have been put on hold!

I guess we need to see whats the max amount of money people are willing to pay for a track day, and this would determine the min numbers.
Perhaps a survey could be set up on the forum?

Need to keep in mind two things:

1) We may get a cheaper rate for the weekday booking

2) People might be willing to pay a bit more for the use of the full track

the full track will cost twice whatever the national section (the section we had before) costs.
However, instead of using the national section we could possibly use the international section next year.
I was told that the price is fixed regardless of the day of the week but I will do my best.

Anyway if 20 people could come on a friday then they could expect to pay approx 150yoyos. Would you be happy with that  ?

Kirkstown is a bit of a haul from Cork, but I'm game for Mondello alright, regardless of date, track configuration, or price, as long as it doesn't stray past E175ish...

I was at the Drifting competition in Rosegreen on Sunday (as a spectator)... there was a red Northern reg E34 M5 that was stunning, and the guy took 3 right handers of varying radius in one continuous very sideways slide - it's fantastic to see. 3 series are the car of choice for it - alot of 318is, although there was a H reg 3 that I presume was once a 318is that was debadged, emptied out, braid fuel lines and fancy handbrake , but a look under the bonnet revealed a 4 cylinder M3 lump. Nice. It was on lock stops down the straight too.

Where's Rosegreen?

I think Mondello should be put under a bit of pressure to discount a Friday session - especially if we want to also run an event in August.

As a an opening offer, I'd suggest €2000 incl. VAT. I wouldn't accept €3000 + VAT for a Friday. If it was negotiated into somewhere in between then it may be a runner.

From September's event, it seems that €125 is the maximum we should be prepared to pay, given the cheapness of Kirkistown, etc.

Posted By: T.J.
Date Posted: 16-December-2003 at 12:18

Rosegreen is just on the Cork side of Cashel.

About 60 cars competed - majority were 3s or 'Tincan' Twincams, a few 200SXs are popping up, a couple of RX7s, there was a 750iL the last time(!) but the circuit is too tight for it. A couple of E36 M3s, an E34 M5, last Xmas there were new M3s from England doing demos.

The 3000GT that was at Murphy & Gunn service managers Mondello day was there too - alas he blew the thing up! I think it was front diff or gearbox, as oil and debris fell out of that area (it happened right in front of me).

Two of the best drivers are brothers in a Sierra and Granada respectfully - the things they do in modest machinery has to be seen.

That would be Robbie Bolger I guess who was probably hammering it around Mondello (he was in the blue e39 in Mondello last Sept putting it sideways whenever he could).

He races a Dunlop Supercar around the circuit during the Summer (pic of him below has him driving last May during unbelievable weather without windscreen).

yup - Robbies - couldn't remember his name. He had a bit of craic in that 530i alright.

I can't wait to get out on a track again! I changed my wheels to a set of 17" Alpina replicas - the previous 17s had the incorrect offset and while they looked great and filled the arches to a tee, the drive wasn't there, not to mention making my steering creak something savage.

The new set has made a significant difference to turn in and balance near the limit, so it'll be good to see how it drives past the limit of grip. And they look the biz.

OK folks - change of plan.
Just finished talking to John Morris in Mondello Park and apparently Saturday April 24th next is available (subject to the motorsport calendar being finalised [around mid-Jan] but he is 75% sure of it).
Price is as before (subject to general numbers).
I will contact them again in a month to double check but they will contact me if there are any problems.
It is also for the national circuit (as before)

There is a meeting scheduled for February and I want to know which date to use: the 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th.
I would prefer the 21st - what do others think?
Also where? Athlone? Would Dublin be more convienent?

21st Feb should be OK. I'd prefer somewhere in the middle of the country such as Athlone or Mullingar, but could probably could get to Dublin.

21st is OK for me too. I'd prefer Mullingar as it is a real haul to get to/from Athlone at the weekend. Last time, I was nearly 6 hours driving.

Re. Mondello, I think €150 is the absolute max I'd be prepared to pay.

Its Called the Mullingar Park Hotel.

When you come into Kinnegad town head for Mullingar (go through Kinnegad town - dont take bypass which is for Galway)

After 10/15 miles youll come onto a dual carriageway. Take the first off ramp which is signposted for Mullingar town and at the top of the ramp you'll see it straight in front of you.

I snuck in on the tail end of a run organised by the Blessington Classic Car & Motorcylce Club - with whom I have no affiliations - on Monday and had a great time.

They had organised a small run from Poulaphouca House just outside of  Blessington - Ballymore Eustace - Dun Lavin - Blessington with a treasure hunt thrown in for laughs. There were a couple of tidy looking '02's in the very mixed attendance which was my excuse for following the procession - honest.

Whole families were getting into the competetive spirit of the treasure hunt which was great to see - as was the sight of a varied bunch of antique, vintage & classic cars flying this way & that in the search for answers to the clues.

I'd be willing to help sort out something like this for the Irish Section, would really no where to start though.

Any takers????
