Footage of a driver taking a "turbo blast" along a remote rural road in Dumfries and Galloway has been posted on a video-sharing website.

The film shows a two-seat sports car speeding down the quiet B-road in the south west Scotland countryside.

On a number of occasions the vehicle crosses the white lines and takes corners on the wrong side of the road.

A police spokesman said they were aware of the video and were concerned by the "growing trend" for such filming.

The video has been posted on the YouTube website.

It shows a car revving off down the minor route and brushing close to bushes on the wrong side of the road.

Nearly four minutes of the "turbo blast" is available to be viewed.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Police said they were aware that there were increasing numbers of people filming such actions to post on the internet.

"We are concerned that this seems to be a growing trend," he said.

"It is a concern that we have drivers who think it is acceptable to do this kind of thing on a public road.

"It is only a matter of time before somebody is killed or seriously injured."

YouTube does not comment on individual videos.

That’s from the BBC ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/6723939.stm - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/south_of_scotland/672393 9.stm ) and I cant access YouTube from the office.

In my opinion this sort of thing has always happened.

Perhaps cars weren’t as fast years ago but folk, like me, did try and drive them as fast as we could.  Cant say I went round corners on the wrong side of the road but I’m sure others did.  It wizzny just me!!!

So whadda think?

a)  These sorts of exploits have become more common and a share of the blame lies with the likes of YouTube.

b)  What a load of nonsense. This has always gone on and the authorities have now found someone to blame.

c)  Summat else?

I’ve actually had a wee thought (and my employer wishes it had been work related!).

Should the likes of YouTube be allowing illegal activity videos to be hosted on their site?  And I mean any illegal activity not just this sort of thing.

Illegal under which country's laws?
Many things deemed illegal in the UK (or Ireland) may be legal elsewhere and because the interweb spans borders enforcing this kind of thing can be difficult.

This kind of thing has always happened. To imagine that people only drive like this now so they can video it then post it on the net is rubbish. This is not the fault of You tube, people are just using it as a tool to show what young lads have been doing in cars for years. Driving fast that is, not the other thing we used our cars for when we were younger

Having watched the video from end to end, I have no idea what the fuss is about.

I've seen a critique from an IAM driver who said that there were some minor infractions from IAM standards, but because of the way the camera does not convey what the driver can actually see, it's hard to judge whether any infraction from IAM standards actually occurred. Given that IAM drivers class themselves as much more fussy than regular drivers, I honestly can't see what all the furore is about.

It's not evident to me whether the driver was speeding, so I won't comment on that. I certainly didn't have much of a problems with the lines he (?) was taking.

I suspect it's more a case of BBC numpties being anti-driver than anything else.

It's difficult to know where to draw the line.

Things like porn cannot be found on there for obvious reasons ( I swear I haven't looked!) and the same with those yucky execution videos that you get to hear about. For these that are highly contraversial and not for general public veiwing there is a clear line that is not to be crossed.

For the video's that are on the borderline you have to asses the risk posed to other people. i.e. will young drivers see a car zooming along country lanes at break neck speed and think 'wow, that looks cool' then go and do it and kill someone? If so then maybe it should be policed to exclude these kind of videos even though the actual video itself is not terrible in visual content? I really am not sure. It is up to individuals to realise that they must take responsibility for their own actions. The problem then is what else should be taken off?

It's a hard question to answer, therefore I will choose option C

Thanks for giving my beer something to help me work out

Mike

On the topic of cornering on the wrong side of the road. I heard it from a guy in Scotland that on a  motorcycle, if you can see clearly you are allowed use both sides of the raod on right hand corners for extra safety. Is this true in the UK, off topic but something I'd like to confirm ?

I think it depends on the central road markings. If it is a broken white line technically you can cross it at any time if safe to do so ( which indicates it is quite legal to corner on the other side of the road) whereas a solid white line cannot be crossed except in the case of a stationary obstruction. If the obstruction is moving you have to stay behind it whatever speed it is travelling at unless instructed to pass by a police officer.

you may not cross a solid white line except in the following circumstances:

1.  to enter a property or driveway

2.  to overtake a stationary object

3.  when directed to by a police officer

4.  to pass a highway service vehicle displaying a keep right sign on its rear

5.  to pass a moving vehicle or object doing less than 10 mph

oh, and offsiding aka extended positioning (the practice of using the full width of the carriageway on a normal single carriageway road) is perfectly legal and advisable when doing very high speeds.... road positioning can be broken into three phases - Safety, then Information (to maintain visibility) then to Reduce cornering forces - safety is the overriding one

in answer to the question i'd go for A; it's always gone on but with the popularity of Gumball type rallies, Getaway in Stockholm and Ghost Rider type films you're more likely to see it recorded for prosterity

Using all the road, provided that you can see up front (and behind) and no one else is using it is fine. It puts less strain on the car and driver. I sometimes wonder who built all these roads with bends that do not seem logical. I usually straighten them out unless there are any solid lines down the middle. Saves tyres, fuel, and makes for a smoother ride, especially at speed. Applies to empty motorways also.
