Taken from Pistonheads:

A Vauxhall VX220 Turbo owner has found himself at the centre of controversy following a posting on the enthusiast site http://www.vx220.org.uk/ - www.vx220.org.uk .

Anthony Coyne posted on the forum photos of the speedometer in his VXT reading 150mph and the view out through the windscreen during the run. The Sun newspaper has picked up on the posting and referred the incident to the Police.

The paper claims of “tracking him down in hours” and talks in its report of how it “identified the exact spot” the high speed run took place on the M20 motorway from the photos posted on the site. Referring to Coyne as “a dummy”, it talks of how it obtained the owner’s phone number and car registration from his earlier postings.

It is not known whether The Sun discovered the posting themselves or if they received a tip off – possibly from within the forum itself.

Inspector Paul Sellwood of Kent police said: “Drivers who commit offences will be dealt with. We are grateful to The Sun.”

The general voice of opinion on the site’s forum has set against the nature of the event and the subsequent promotion of it. Nevertheless, with ever more video content being posted on car enthusiast web sites, the story raises some interesting issues around exactly who might be watching any such material posted

There was another incident where a fella on 10 points who was caught speeding admitted online how he got his girlfriend to admit to the offence.
In the end both of them got done!

Thats just plain stupid Paul. It's irrisponsible boy racers like you that give us
all a bad name. Not only are you driving far in excess of the speeed limit,
but you're also driving at night time. This is evident as the headlight light is
on. I'm going to send that photo together with your details to The Sun
newspaper. You're in big trouble now.

Wouldn't it be great by 'fixing' your own speedo at 120kph and recording
other drivers flying past you on the motorway (as you drive along at 70kph)
and send it in to TV3.

The guy's acted like a complete muppet, he should've backed off when the general response to his original post was negative, instead he flamed it up and dragged it on, much to his demise. Somebody's obviously sounded him out from within the forum or even from a casual reading guest. Unless it can be reaslitically proven where the offence took place, I doubt very much he'll get more than a warning.

Let there be no confusion from now on, my car cannot go above 120kph - does everybody understand that

I just don't understand peoples need for publicity. He obviously was compelled to let everyone know he maxed out his motor.

Far more interesting was the link I found to pistonheads, and a forum user there. To cut a long story short, he lost control of his car while out on a spirited drive with his chums. He hit a motorcyclist who fought for his life, and did survive, albeit having lost the use of one arm.

Drivers chums had a sticker to a website & forum. Within hours the police had downloaded everything, including making the link between crashed drivers posts and driver. Such posts included comments on being able to keep or drop 911s on twisty back roads, how he knew certain roads like the back of his hand, how it was fab to drive with great corners etc. etc..  one of these roads was the road he crashed on.

Police used this in court as a guide to the sort of behaviour the driver was capable of and had a history of doing. The driver got a 3yr ban, and jailed for 12 months. In fairness, his posts are articulate, well written, he seems a bright intellegent person, pleaded guilty straight away, and accepted what ever punishment he got. He admits his life has changed for ever.

The post is here http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=377548&hw=+%2B10+%2Bpence+%2Bworth - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=37754 8&hw=+%2B10+%2Bpence+%2Bworth  - 10 pages but worth reading. In summary, lets enjoy the motors we have, but be wide of the consequences.

I know I am coming across trés-preachy this morning, but it's prompted by some of the posts in the last couple of weeks.... we all like to think we've better car control than the great unwashed, we like to think we are better clued in than E90 316i drivers, we like to think we can drive our M3s @ 140mph just because there isn't any traffic around as if that's the only thing to worry about etc etc.. but the fact is things go pear-shaped regardless. A reminder every now & again is no harm.

That is why I pay to let out agression on a track. Much safer for everyone. Still it is not a padded cell, one has to still be careful on a track. In fact I am certain I am more observant on the track... at least I am telling the truth.

The invinceble thing is part of growinng up I think. We all go troug that phase fades away eventually however for some it is rather aprupt so to speak. In my early driving days a guy took me for a spin who was professionally racing and he scared me stiff. Gave me great respect for speed and how large the difference in driving skills can be. As there is now speed limit on aprox. 40% of the Autobahn I learnt fast that driving at high speed is a tricky thing and the challenge is not so much in getting up to 200+km/h put to safely drive at it. My experience is that doing that for an hour or so is rather nerve wrecking (try bracking from 250 to 100 in a hurry as some muppet comes on the fast lane to overtake a lorry).

Young people here seem not to understand danger wich comes with speed as there are speed limit everywhere and track days are as rare and difficult to get at as hens teeth. So they chance it

On the tread topic in general I find it strange that the sun is so law obeying as that is not there usual way of doing things. Guess whatever helps to sell that sh$t paper ...or maybe they feel they owe the authorities?

You are quite right about the beer but as I have to work early in the morning I can ill afford to take the chance of much more. I do however drink a nice bit of JD at the weekend. As for Urquell, I've never heard of it, where can it be found?

Secondly, the 540 V8, thats the second reason I drink Carlsberg. Anything stronger and that V8 might show me how to catch me off guard lol!

I bought it with the six in it. Very rare but what a find and I have a friendly seller off ebay and my wife to thank for finding it. I will be buried in it I swear! It will happily transport my 3 kids and shopping or dogs to wherever I need to go with plenty of power for the open roads or better still, plenty more power when I'm running solo! It was a star find and I've never seen another since, not with the bodykit and suspension too.

540 V8 - car sounds like an absolute pearl...

Urquell is a Czekoslovakian (spelling?!) lager; largely credited with inventing the process of brewing lager. Sometimes for sale here in specialised wine outlets and I can recommend it, even though (more than usually) expensive (rip-off-ireland) here. As a bit of trivia they were one of the smaller sponsors of the last EJ owned Jordan F1 team. It's moderately strong so better leave the 540 standing; wouldn't want anything to happen to it...

My car has the same bits on it from new. (bh15009) there where 64 rhd's made with the manual box but I have no clue as to how many are still alive.

The really special ones came with manual recaros and the shorter steering box (3 turns lock to lock) as in the 3.8's and the standard aircon. The US and Canada had one with edc suspension (optional in europe) M5 mirrors and sills on top of the other stuff

and it was called Tschechoslowakai the other one (Ch...) is the ENGLISH version

dosn't exist anymore is now seperated into Tschechien and Slowenien or something like it.

When I said about the beer and the car, I did mean the next day and not at the same time! I do NOT drink and drive EVER.

I have been wanting to clear that up all day after it suddenly hit me what I'd written!
