One of the guys from my local IAM group is talking about organising a track day, I've been to a few (normally doing IAM promotion) but I've never had anything to do with the organisation.

What is involved ?

What are the likely costs ?

Compared to a BMW track day, this one, if it goes ahead, is going to be a bit strange, as very few of my local group are below 40 years of age, and very few drive any kind of performance car.

Costs: track hire & third party insurance.
Do you know how many will be going? Charge on a break even basis.

Make sure all payments are in advance.

People promising to show and pay on the day, does not always happen, so if you are basing breakeven on these people be prepared to dig into your own pocket.

Full payment is best, deposits are an administative nightmare.

Base your price on the minimum you expect and cancel if you don't have minimum. If you have more than breakeven, split a refund between attendees, have a raffle (prize could be discount off next event) give to charity etc.

Also the track wants your money as much as you want to use their track so haggle.

Be careful with insurance and what track provides. I have never encountered a problem, but sure you understand what is and what is not covered in the insurance covering the event
