Subject: Wheel suggestions....

Hi guys,

My car currently has "bottlecap" (maybe i'm wrong tho) alloys fitted. These come with a tyre size which doesn't seem to exist  . 220 / 55 R390

Anyway, I'm looking to change to a wheel which i can readily source tyres for at a reasonable cost which will also suit the car.

Aftermarket, original or replica I'm not too pushed.

Anyone any suggestions? (with pics if you can as i'm clueless to differing styles or names)

Many thanks in advance

Mark.

Are they metric sizes? Anyway, I tend to be a bit "period" with wheels - the ones from your car's particular era will probably suit it best.

This website (posted here recently, thanks) is excellent as a tool to discover which wheels were put on which models.

Edit: Radial Style 32, maybe? Do you want ease of cleaning or best look when clean? RS 32 falls into the latter category!

These are the ones currently fitted.

My german's not the best but does this site offer these wheels in imperial sizes?

Yuk. Those aren't going to suit an e34. BBS, Parrallels, Radial style 32's, or Throwing Stars suit them the best IMO.

Your current wheels are aproximately 15" (just over it I think). Do you want to go much bigger?

16's or 17's i was thinking. Most likely 17's.

Does anyone know of a site where i can photoshop different wheels onto an E34?

I was always quite partial to an Alpina wheel with no dish...

I have this on my E30 and going to be doing to the E34 as I cannot seem to track down any style 5's in SA...which would be my first choice...

Ben on the forum here used to have a set of Alpinas on his E34... simply fantastic looking! You should be able to find a decent set of new replicas on eBay for decent money.

ps... if you do go for E39 wheels, I think you'll need some sort of spigott ring to help position the wheel on the hub. **I think**

I borrowed this from a gentleman on another forum... Hope he does not mind...

I think the M-Parallels look really well, I put 18" reps on my Touring: http://www.bavarian-board.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=10015&pos=3 - http://www.bavarian-board.co.uk/gallery/displayimage.php?alb um=lastup&cat=10015&pos=3

Just make sure that whatever wheels you get are either hub-centric or that you get some spigot rings as otherwise you'll experience really bad vibrations between 55 and 70 mph.

Just checking that the car you are looking to put wheels on is the one suggested by your forum name?

The wheels in the pic you posted look like style 13 15" wheels from an e36 (as per my 325i) and these were not metrics.  On the early e34, iirc, there were 2 common alloy wheel options, the 15" x-spokes - which I think look great on the e34, and a set of metrics that were described as TD wheels.

The link below is a guide to most of the official BMW wheels.  It seems to be complete from around '90 onwards.

I'm thinking that the previous owner has changed the wheels at some stage because these are definitely the wheels currently fitted and I already have the 50 - 70 mph wobble.

They are unfortunately metric though having 165TR390 stamped on the wheel itself, and tyres being 225 / 55 R390.

I'll upload a pic of the actual wheel this evening.

The Alpina's look well on it but the m-parallells are top o the list at this stage. Now to find a set......

Ditto the Alpinas and M-Parallels, sweet, any rim with a deep dish really suit
the E34, but beware, if you go with those wheels you'll be thinking about
lowering the car, and from there on you're on a slippery slope!

 It's always a slippery slope,

Lowering cars on our roads doesn't make much sense to me though.

30-40mm maybe but even that's a bit much for a few of the roads out our way. Comfort's the key (I must be getting old cos i can't believe I just said that)

LOL

I drove my 3 Series with 16" tyres and lowered suspension for the last years of my teenage life. Now, at 22, I prefer the gentle, comforting ride of my stock 5 Series suspension...

I was quoted £155 by eiretyres.com so thats not bad.....

It's the fact that i can't pop into my local tyre fitter and pick one up. Waiting 3 days for a tyre when i need one doesn't appeal to me.

Thanks for the info though.

If it is in fact an '89 520 you have then the metric alloys (made by BBS) would have been (stupidly) retrofitted by a previous owner. AFAIK they only appeared on the late '94-early '96 facelifted E34's....

More stupid me. The first owner still had the wheels in his shed. I could've taken them with the car. Steelies with hubcaps though so i left them...

Date Posted: 30-August-2007 at 13:15

I've see the Style 33 16" alloys (from the '96 on 5 Series) on a few E34's and they look pretty OK if not a little anonymous. Breakers yards would be a good place to start (spigot rings would be required for a perfect fit)...

I had the Alpinas on the E34 as said and i loved them, kicking myself i didnt keep them when i sold the car, thought i wouldnt have another E34 and i now have two e34 sports and thats only 9 months ago!!

I have a set of the original BBS 15" wheels off my sport if you were interested, also a set of TSW's which are horrible! 15inchers.. good for a door stop maybe..

But im off in search of more 17" Alpinas for the good sport anyway!

There's still something that doesn't quite fit.  The wheel style you showed is neither a metric nor a fit for the e34 to my knowledge.  The link below is to a somewhat similar style of wheel that was a metric and was generally fitted to the e28 5 series and I don't think it was fitted to the e34.

One of the guys put up a link to a TD style metric for the e34 (available in the last 2-3 years of e34 production) but the one I'm thinking of was earlier and plainer, not a cross spoke, and would have been standard equipment on an early e34 525i or 530i in Ireland or a non-SE in the UK.

If the wheels you have are style 13's with metric tyres and fitted to an e34 then it doesn't surprise me too much if they are causing you trouble!

Diarmuid, im not sure those wheels on the 93 525 are metrics, i had them on my 525TD originally before i fitted 15inch BBS's and ultimately the Alpinas, they were on it from new i believe and my 90' 520i SE had them fitted too and they were 205/55/15, unless there was the exact same rim design available in metric too??

You are correct Ben. The only metric rims that BMW did for the E34 were as per shown earlier on my car. (The 635csi also came with metrics).

The rims in the carzone add that Diarmuid had I think were originally fitted to the ultra rare 525ix (4wd)....

Ditto, what are e28 alloys doing on an E34, madness! Give the car a bizzarre

Whip them off, upgrade the alloys and you'll have her back to her former
