You have a standard BMW e30 318i with the M40 engine. The e30 is the body style of the 3 series from '83 till 91.

The M40 is the code used to describe the engine: 4 cylinder 1596/1796cc (yours is 1796cc) used in the e30 316i & 318i and the e34 518i. This engine should not be confused with that of the 318is which used the M42 engine which had a timing chain instead of belt, DOHC instead of single and lots more horses!
