Hi

A question for the older beemer nutcases out there

I've just seen an ad for a nice BMW e12 520 in which the seller, a classics dealer by the looks of it, says that there are less than 10 E12 520 models left in the UK.

I suppose if had said there were less than 10 E12s of all kinds that would have been wrong, but still, only 10 520s left? Nearly all the e12s i've seen for sale (about 3 in total i think) over the last three or four months have been 520s.

Its a 1978 car, so would soon qualify for VRT and tax free status, hence my interest.

They are getting rare, but not that rare.  Either the dealer is talking his car up or else he's being very specific about some attribute or specification that accounts for the rarity.  Either way, don't let them talk it up too much or be talked in to paying too much on the basis of rarity.

No, its an E3, the one that came before the e12.

I'm surprised the owner says its e12. Maybe not a died-in-the-wool older beemer enthusiast, methinks.

Looks nice though.

I was looking at that ad for the e12. It's a beautiful car but I don't think they are nearly as rare as the vendor is suggesting. It is difficult to get a good one though as they do suffer from rust just like any old BMW.

If you do buy the car I would garage it to keep it in its garage queen status. These old beauties can deteriorate very quickly.

Regards,

Bayerische

No there not nearly that rare, Id hold out for a 528 if your looking for a Exempt car.

The chap with the E3 3.0si obviously is no BM nut for a start it would have been in the 7 series class (Some of them had double glazing) The E12 was smaller and ran along side the E3.

Off hand I can think of 3 irish registered e12 520 (all autos btw) and 3 scrappers in kildare alone. They're not that rare by a long shot and were considered the first five series, if anything they directly replaced the 4 door Neue Klasse range.

They like to rust but not as bad as the e28, e12 was a heavier car with thicker gauge steel but don't have the popularity of the e28. I personally like the pre 77 model, drove one a few years ago and had very similar road manners to a 2002 a very enjoyable experience.

As Curley and Rob say, there are still plenty E12s left around. I had the pleaseure of looking at two very rare Turbo Alpina versions recently and a friend has bought a very rare '76 530 MLE from South Africa. Fantastic car.

Hi Tom,

My secret car will be ready for the summer, a little later than I had hoped. What it is, you will just have to wait. Haha. You won't be dissappointed though. Seeing it in the flesh the other week was fantastic. Its going to be a cracker.
