Hi, Just about to do (my) first oil change in my E36 325, 122k miles - what's the thinking on slick 50 these days - worth doing or not? TIA, Jon -------------

Well there are quite a few people who have sued them for damaging their engines!! The PTFE in Slick 50 when it gets hot it solidifies and gets stringy blocking oilways etc then your engine dies. Some have found it to be fine tho!! Personally I would get ZX1 Superlube 250ml £16 from Halfords or demon tweeks. Doesn't contain PTFE (like the white tape plumbers use to seal joints). But if you use a good oil, like Mobil 1 (the new blend stuff) then you don't need additives really |

Friend of mine bunged a bottle in on his E36 @ 100k and its done him no harm. On a car I had before I threw it in at 40k and 80k miles later the engine was still going strong as ever. |

I have used Slick 50 in the past in a Ford I used to own and it did no harm, although by the same token it also didn't seem to do much good either. I put it in at 75K, at which time the engine was a quiet as a mouse, and by 100K the engine was starting to develop a big end knock and was generally noisey. This was despite using semi sythetic oil and changing it every 5K. Also worth noting is that in the BMW owners handbook it states that the engines are designed to run without the use of additives. My advice would be just to use a quality oil and change it regularly. ------------- Entering an age of Austerity and now driving a Focus Diesel. |

Spent 5 years racing in the Slick 50 Road Saloon Championship & used to get the stuff free so bunged it in everything including the race car. Never did any harm infact won the Championship in 91

Just the once, only later years when I started winding it up to 8200 it needed 2 rebuilds a year. So you must remember what I ws racing then ? Were you also racing ? |

Ford Capri, the championship is still going under different sponsorship. The Toyo series is the Super Road Saloons & ModProds together, won both of those championships aswell. |

Had both good and bad experiences. One Ford engine (70k) and had to throw the lump out after 15k. Lost pressure and gummed it totally up. Other was a Honda V-TEC, still going strong 25k later. I wouldn't use it in a BMW tho, just use a good quality semi and frequent flushes and filter changes. |

Well, decided to save the cash for Slick 50 and flushed & filled with some good quality oil (thanks to which oil thread). All seems v happy Cheers Jon -------------
