some people seem to change cars more often than their clothes

in my 40 years (omg!) of motoring I have only had a...

Morris Traveller - including woodworm

Austin Mini - green with a white roof (reg 1944 FD - if only I'd kept that)

Sunbeam Alpine - white, and generally with only 3 working cylinders

Vauxhall Viva *2 - both run into the ground, when they used as much oil as petrol

Opel Manta * 3 - one crashed by son#2, other passed to son#1

E30 325iSE - sold to pay for the M3

E30 315is (SWMBO's) - written off by son#2

E30 M3

E36 325i (SWMBO's)

errr - that's it

My total comes to touching eur160k.  Worringly, the buying price minus the selling price comes to a total of close to euro80k!  Fuel for the mileage that those cars covered, at todays prices, adss up to approx euro90k, insurance comes to maybe 20k and other running costs (assuming a repair, maintenance and road tax cost of 7.5c per mile - not unreasonable) of 36k.  Grand total - euro226k over the past 15 years or so.

Assumptions - avg fuel consumption of 32.5mpg, fuel cost of euro1.30 per litre.

Hopefully Mrs D won't have a look in here to see that figure!

How the chuff can folk have owned so many cars?

Passed my test in Nov 1995.

1st 91 H Rover Mini Mayfair 998cc 1995 to 2000 (the student years)

2nd 90 H Vauxhall Senator 3.0i 24v CD Auto 2000 to 2004 (fast, vast and impressive)

3rd 98 S BMW E39 523i SE Auto 2004 to 2007 (refined but not quick enough)

4th 03 53 BMW E60 545i SE Auto 2007 to 2008 (which was stolen with the keys from a BMW Dealership Douglas Park in Glasgow)

5th 04 04 BMW E60 545i SE Auto 2008 - (scarily quick and sooo comfy)

No nasty front wheel drive, belt driven camshaft, shopping carts in that lot!

Mini was a great wee front wheel drive go kart.  It went to my sister who had it another 2 years until you could put your hand thru the floor.

Nice selection, wiseguy; I am always tempted by Alfa Romeo whenever I am changing cars, I just haven't had the courage yet!

00 would make your Compact an E36, right? I seem to have spotted an unbelievable number of E36 Compacts in the last few weeks (especially on a drive to Dublin a couple of Saturdays ago); are they turning in to a bit of a cult-car?

86 Peugeot 206 1.0 3 door - Brilliant first car
88 Peugeot 206 1.1 4 door - Now with 55bhp! Car Magazine Car of the
Decade, what more can you say?
96 Seat Ibiza 1.4 Sport - Loved the looks of this car, solid motor
91 BMW 520iA - Holy cow, bought impulsively, start of the Celtic Tiger,
when I took it to my mechanic he asked me if I won the lotto!
99 Seat Toledo 1.8 Signum (new shape) - Quick, comfy, looked great, it's
biggest failing was not being an E34.
95 BMW 520iA - Current, bought a year after the Toledo after an exhaustive
search for a pristine example, been driving it for 8 years.

Driving since Dec '92 (Day of my 17th B'day), Full license since Mar '94, own car since Apr '97.

Apr '97 to Oct '99; 94k to 130k; Paid £3,000 (to my father!), sold for £900.  Had just gotten new engine (1.9 non-turbo diesel).

1989 Peugeot 405GLD Estate (Red); clutch went, and the mechanic broke the radiator when fixing the clutch!  Eventually the electrics (lights, mainly) went belly up.  Ended up with a row of spotlights on a switch because the full beams had had it!

Oct '99 to Apr '02; 96k to 135k; Paid £5,000 (with 12 month warranty), traded in for €2,000.  1.5 petrol.

1995 Honda Civic Coupe (Black).  There were only about 6 around at the time, and they were all different colours.  Got it tinted and put 17's on it; no bodykit.  Left the alloys into a local tyre centre for tyres, and they "left them outside and someone robbed them".  Never got any compensation, and I no longer use their tyre centre or their motor factors on the Tuam Road in Galway.  Stuck a set of cheap 15's on it (still had the standard steel 13's for it in my shed until last year).  Would love to get it back.

Apr '02 to Oct '04; 92k to 130k; Paid €2,000 + €2,500 trade in (ripped off, and 3 month warranty from current Galway dealer wasn't worth the paper it was written on), sold for €1,200.  2.0 petrol.

1995 Honda Accord Coupe (Green).  Nice car, intorduced me to cruise control.  No alloys, bodykit, or anything else done to it (aside from reversing it into a pole and almost turning it into an accordian!!!).  Quick, but not an especially exciting car.  Sold to an Eastern European.

Oct '04 to Mar' '05; 60k to 67k; Paid €0 (was my mothers, and she was getting nothing for it on trade in, and I had sold my Accord), sold for €0 (gave it to a family member who was in need of a decent car).  1.6 petrol.

2000 Fiat Marea Weekend SX.  This was my mothers second one of these, and were actually a really good car.  Had a split rear door which, if you were carrying something long, you could leave the bottom half open and close the top half.  Also had a removeable towbar.  The only problem was leg positioning on a long run (I'm 6'5"); your right leg tended to get numb!!!  Only a problem for people over 6'3", though!  Very underrated car, and still going strong in the family.  If you need something cheap with good space that won't let you down, you'll get a fairly fresh one of these for small money.  (My mother only changed it as she bought a 1998 BMW 520i (in red), which was the car that inspired both myself and Digweed to buy ours.

Mar '05 to Present; 69k to ?; paid €12,000 (God knows how much more spent on it!!!), not sold.  2.0 petrol.

1998 BMW 520i (Black).  Now with Angel Eyes, Celis rear lights, ACS bodykit, ACS 17" alloys, smoked repeaters, chrome dials, sport interior, and a few other bits and pieces, including a (still unfitted) short shifter!!!

Others driven long term but not owned:

1983 Austin Maestro 1.3 petrol.

1983 Nissan Cherry 1.3 petrol (the boxy one).

1988 VW Jetta 1.3 petrol.

1989 VW Golf 1.6TD (broke down when I was driving it back from Scotland; had to tow it at 1am from Enniskillen to Galway (not an experience I ever want to repeat).  Was supposed to have a new engine, but the garage had lied.

1993 Rover 214SI 1.4 petrol.

1998 Nissan Sunny 1.3 petrol.

1989 Opel Corsa 1.0 petrol.

1993 Opel Astra 1.4 petrol.

1998 Fiat Marea SX Weekend 1.6 petrol.

A couple of Fiat Tempras and Tipos (Burn them all!!!).

Fiat Cinquecento (not all that bad).

1995 Nissan Almera 1.4 petrol (190k and still going strong at the time).

2000 Rover 45 1.4 petrol (now with 160k and still going).

2002 Kia Sedona Combi 2.9TD (excellent vehicle, although back seats for shorties only).

1998 BMW 520i 2.0 petrol.

2003 Rover 45 1.4 petrol.

1999 Hyundai Accent 1.3 petrol.

1999 Landrover Freelander 1.8 petrol.

And a little pile of vans.

Forgot about a Mark I Golf I owned for a while, too.  And another couple of oddball cars like that.

With any luck larzyh!  I may not actually lose my shirt when I sell it...

On Alfas, all the cliches are true. For the 10% of love and adoration you will feel,  you will get 90% heartache.  If you think you've found a good one, half the selling price, half it again...and still run a mile!!!

Passed my test in 1987 in my Uncle's Fiesta. Unlike Eamo, I tend to hang on to my cars:

1979 Opel Rekord E 2.0 (51 LZL) hand me down from my dad. Real bus. Drove it until the inner front wings failed. Did all the Berlina things to it - alloys, rear headrests, velour interior, etc.

1986 Opel Rekord E 2.0S (433 WZV) was my first car I really loved. Kept it immaculate and did everthing on it from engine strips to suspension work to rebuilding diffs. Really comfy and handled quite well. If you kept the revs up it actually moved forward. Eventually sold it on when it had around 165,000 miles on it. Still was a solid as ever - would love to know where it is now.

1987 BMW 316 - first hook into BMWs. Had some serious quick drives in it. Only kept it 18 months as I wanted something even better.

1990 BMW 318is. Have it since 1999 and still love it.

Other cars that have passed through my hands (usually the wife's):

1981 Talbot Samba 1.0L and 1.1L (overlooked cars at the time)
1979 Ford Cortina 2.0S (should never have scrapped this)
1976 Ford Escort RS1600 (shouldn't have let this go)
1973 Ford Cortina 1.3L (rusted away)
1986 Ford Fiesta 1.1L (good crack)
1988 Opel Ascona 1.6D (crap)
1993 Vauxhall Cavalier (Vectra) 1.7TD - one of the most hassle free cars I've ever run
1999 Opel Omega 2.0CD100 - full spec, absolute beauty, if underpowered.
1999 Nissan Primera 1.8 Sport (fabulous drivers car for FWD, terrible styling)
2001 Seat Alhambra 1.9 PD TDi, chipped :-))), current family car

Years ago, my dad had a Cortina Mk. II 1600E - sent to Ringsend.
