I heard recently that there is a speed restrictor on the M3's, which only allows to govern the engine to a top speed of 155mph. Someone told me that their friend had the restrictor taken off and was able to achieve a greater top speed some where in the figure of 170+mph!!

Has anyone heard of a similar result. Is it possible to take off the speed restrictor? What sort of cost are involved?

Ther are companies that can take it off - similar to chipping your car, or if you had a turbo, removing the boost limit.

Try a Japanese import company as I'm sure Japanese cars are limited to about 100mph.

And I would have thought you should get to about 170mph - I went off the clock (150mph) in my Rover coupe Turbo (200bhp) and yes the speedo is pretty accurate as I was going off the revs aswell which gives a more accurate reading.

My 328 has just shy of 200bhp and manuf. figs say it does 140+mph so I'm sure with a 120bhp or so more you can achieve about 170mph although then you get into wind restriction teritory.

Yup, should be fine for that. Try Rossiters as they do the schnitzer chip with integral delimiter.

It's the 'gentleman's agreement' limit that you'll find set to 155mph on many german cars.

As stated, many of the aftermarket chips will get rid of the limiter.

On tests on the 3L some drivers got it to 165 before cutting out-the evos limiter is stricter to 155. Try the chips but is it really necessary on UK roads or you jst gotta spend that cash Topcat?!!?

ha ha, but no. Just like to know all the hidden secrets and options to this great car.

Had the speed restricter lifted on my other car when I had the turbo superchipped, which was easy enough and it seemed to free rev better too. Just wondered how complicated it was on the BMW's and whether it gave other gains other than a greater top speed.
