Can anyone please explain why the inlet manifold of my BMW 2.5 litre turbo diesel is heavily coated (inside) with what is clearly (darkly) engine oil ? Is there a known problem with a breather, for example, that causes oil vapour to be sucked in? If nobody in the club can answer - please could someone tell me who might?

Further to my unrespondedto message of 30th Dec - one observation offered elsewhere is that the black, oily sustance in the inlet manifold may not be engine oil, but fuel oil contaminated with carbon. Anyway - is it perhaps normal to find a diesel engine's inlet manifold internally coated with any such substance? (NB I would never have known it was there if I hadn't had to renew a manifold gasket.) Incidentally, I used to own a 1938 BMW 327/80, sold to a German gentleman called Jurgen about 20 years ago, and was a member of the club for many years then. I wonder if the car still exists?
