By KEN THOMAS – 13-08-2008

WASHINGTON (AP) — BMW AG said Wednesday it was recalling 200,000 vehicles over concerns that the front passenger air bag may not deploy in a crash.

The German automaker said the recall involves the 2006 3 Series, the 2004-2006 5 Series, and the 2004-2006 X3 compact sport utility vehicles in the United States.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a posting on its Web site that small cracks could develop in a seat detection mat and deactivate the front passenger air bags.

NHTSA said the air bag warning lamp and the passenger air bag "on-off" light would remain on. The head protection system, however, would not be affected, the government said.

BMW spokesman Tom Plucinsky said there were no injuries or accidents reported.

If the seat detection mat fails to sense that a person is sitting in the passenger seat, it deactivates the air bag. Plucinsky said customers alerted the company when they noticed that the air bag light indicated a deactivated air bag even when a passenger sat in the seat.

NHTSA opened an investigation into the issue in September 2007 and upgraded its probe in January. In addition to the vehicles under Wednesday's recall, the ongoing investigation also includes the 2004-2006 Z4, 2006 X5, 2006 6 Series and some 2004-2006 7 Series vehicles.

Plucinsky said there was insufficient data to determine whether a recall would be required on the additional vehicles under investigation.

BMW had received 23,739 warranty claims over the air bag system issue by early January, NHTSA said.

To respond to the problem, BMW said it would extend the warranty to 10 years without any mileage limit for the following vehicles: 2006 6 Series, 2006 3 Series with standard seat, 2004-2005 Z4, 2004-2006 7 Series, 2006 X5, and 2004-2006 5 Series with comfort seats.

BMW said under the extended warranty program, the detection mat in a vehicle with the air bag system problems would be replaced at no charge to the customer.

Owners over this side of the pond canb breathe a sigh of relief!
(Still, I'm sure many would have liked the extended warranty!)

BMW has announced a recall for 200,000 of its 3-Series, 5-Series and X3 models in America due to a problem with the front passenger airbag deployment.

The fault specifically affects vehicles fitted with optional M Sport seats, which develop cracks in their leather over time, damaging the airbag sensor under the seat. BMW says it’s possible that passengers will not be detected, and that the passenger airbag will therefore not be deployed.

A spokesman for BMW UK said, “The recall is only affecting the North American models as their airbag systems are different to those found on the UK and European spec BMWs.”

Official Press Release:
Quote Statement on voluntary recall involving front passenger seat sensor mat on U.S.A. model BMWs
13/08/2008

Today, BMW announced a voluntary recall regarding the front passenger air bag seat sensor mat involving approximately 200,000 Model Year 2004-06 vehicles. Affected are certain Model Year 2006 3-Series, Model Year 2004-06 5-Series, and Model Year 2004-06 X3 vehicles, depending upon seat type. BMW has found that the sensor mat may become damaged during vehicle usage depending upon the manner and frequency of the front passenger's entry and exit.
BMW will begin sending customer letters in late September 2008. Affected owners may continue to drive their vehicles; however, customers should contact their BMW Center if the air bag warning lamp, and the passenger air bag “on-off” lamp are illuminated simultaneously. In this situation, BMW recommends customers not to use the front passenger seat and have the vehicle serviced immediately. At the present time, we are unaware of any accidents or injuries as a result of this issue.

Is there such a place online where all the recalls are listed for any of the models?

There are a good few sites out there but AFIAK most are for US models which (like the above example) don't affect Euro cars. However the AA do a recall list:
