  Hi guys,

I had a strange problem yesterday. Whilst driving in the rain the wipers simply stopped working and the windscreen washer spray would not work either. I stopped and started the engine and all worked fine again. I have however noticed that now when the wipers are set to intermittent, some times they work fine and other times you will see the wipers start to move a fraction for two cycles and then work at the third attempt. The car is an E39 535i with the M62 engine.
Could it be a faulty relay? If so does anone know if it is one of the relays in the rear wheel well?

Thanks folks,

Bob.

My E39 did this.

Every 11 months the wipers would just stop, regardless of switch position.

Switch the car off, re start car and it would work.

Looking thru the old service invoices from the previous owner, there was a comment on them from BMW telling him that he needed a new wiper relay and to arrange to get it fitted.  By the looks of it this was never done.

I'm sure I put a post on here about that when it happened to me this time 4 years ago.

Andrew
