Hey guys, i'm new to this and am more than a little confused!

I bought a 2000 535 8months ago, all started well but slowly the idle speed became worse, now it just sits at 500rpm and occasionally dives to about 200rpm if i'm braking and then pops back up!
Sounds abit rough also, but she's never missed a beat!

Any ideas what could be causing this?
Also i think the mpg has gotten worse since this started!

Thanks

IIRC 500 is about right on the V8s...the 540 sits at about 500 but not the dive.

Might be a lambda probe,02 sensor,MAF or might be oil seepage into the plugs causing misfire.

Get it on a diagnostics and see whats what.

Yeah my V8 idles at a rather low 500 rpm as too did my first V8.  I was driving a company Focus last week at I noticed that it was idling at 800 rpm which to me now seems really fast.

Is it a manual or auto?

I'm sure this has happened to others on here.  Didn't Studyolic have this problem on his 535?  Try doing a search on here.  Pity he isn't about anymore.

Engine could just need a good service, oil, fuel and air filters changed along with new spark plugs.  Try running it on VPower and use a fuel system cleaner i.e. redex.

Isnt there a run-safe programme on the MAF which can be used to check if its working ok? IIRC with the car at idle you disconnect the MAF...if the car idles and drives better then the MAF is at fault.

You should ALWAYS have´the AC button ON  on a BMW V8, gives 150rpm + and its needed to get the alternator work OK it starts charge at around 600 rpm.  (BMW recomendations from BMW TIS)

Its also possible to rise the  idle with Diagnosprogram at BMW dealer.

Personally I just use driving to keep my revs over 500 .  If I only ever idled it I could see how having the a/c on would be a good bodge to keep the alternator charging, but traffic here isn't that bad....yet.

As for the dive problem, a diagnostic is probably wise, but both of my V8s really benefitted when I just changed the plugs and filters, put several loads of injector cleaner through and ragged the a*** off 'em for a couple of weeks!...  I think the bigger engines get pootled too much.

Thats a nice tip about the AC seems to help and it seems to stop it diving so much to!
Once the christmas is over i'll have to treat her to a nice service/diagnostic and some tlc!
She deserves it!

When I put my AC on she idles at 750 which means car has to be taken when sitting stopped at lights etc as with being auto she is really trying to get away from you.  Creep is certainly quick!
