Drove 70 miles to Belfast today to take the wee man to the hospital we were in for the usual hour and came back out only to find that when I started the car the engine was ,aking a noise like a tappet gone. I too the car to the nearest garage and checked the oil, seemed ok so to make sure for the drive home I got an oil and filter change done which silenced it a little but it is still there........... any ideas

Maybe the oil wasn't getting around properly  if the filter was clogged up? Could explain the tappety sound if they were a bit dry.

Made the mistake of not checking the oil on my car once and it sounded like a bag of spanners as it was low. Topped it up and it quietened down a lot.

Hydraulic tappets are non serviceable items.  It could be one is on the way out or when you parked the car the oil started draining out of the head and thus out of the tappets.  There is a plastic valve in the head which retains the oil in the head so the tappets aren't starved of oil on start up.  I've heard that this plastic valve can give stop working as effectively as time goes on.  Don't know where in the head the valve is though.

Check your coil packs ... I've got the same problem at the moment (for the 2nd time).
The 1st time, it turned out to be a loose spark plug in No. 2 Cylinder.
This time it's No. 3 Cylinder's, Coil Pack.

I've previously had a loose plug (#6) causing a terrible knocking noise...

Worth checking them al before spending more money on the car!
