Ok chaps. My steed failed its mot today (still driveable on the old ticket until 8th July), but I need to get it sorted asap. The car is a 1996 E34 518i estate. The front offside shocker is leaking (this is all it has failed on). I've looked on the GFS website, they can supply complete legs for £67.50 per side. I've spoken to Euro car parts, they can supply inserts for £17.50 per side. I'm advised its only the inserts that wear. Any advise/experience ? I will of course be replacing both, its only an 1800, so doesn't need uprating.

You may find that there is more stripping down to do to just fir the inserts so what you save on the parts may be swallowed up by the extra labour costs. Although thinking about it again that is a £100 saving, that's 2-3 hours labour. It wouldn't cost that much more in labour to strip it down. As long as the inserts are of decent quality, go for them. It's easier to do the inserts - you just whip off the top mount and spring, undo the big cap nut, and slide it out. Slide the new one in, new cap nut and you're done. and if you do the whole leg you'll need wheel bearings. I fitted sachs/boge inserts to my beast recently, and it was a quick job. They wern't £17.50, seems I was missquoted, the cheap ones were £37.50, I've bought bilsteins for £57.00, as I was advised to do. The bilsteins are original equipment, but cost £157.00 from the main dealer (in fairness they whispered where to get them from). ------------- Best Wishes Nigel |

OEM from anywhere are your best bet. No point whatsoever buying genuine BMW parts to get a BMW stamp and in a BMW box. ------------- Be exclusive and drive a Petrol 5 Series! That was very decent of Messers Lovett & Co.
