Maybe you've heard about this but, early next week all UK mobiles will be on a directory which will mean that anyone will be able to access the numbers (spammers etc..)

It is simple to unsubscribe but, it MUST be done before the beginning of next week 13/07/09 to make sure that you are ex directory.

You may want to suggest it to all your friends and family who have UK mobiles or they could be swamped by unsolicited messages and calls.

Removal is recommended by the BBC - see link below.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/working_lunch/8091621.stm - BBC

The Directory of Mobile Phone numbers goes live next week.
All numbers including those belonging to children will be open to cold calling and the general abuse that less scrupulous telesales people subject us too.

To remove your number from the Mobile phone Directory, click below.

http://www.118800.co.uk/ - Once there, click the Ex-directory link (Top right) and on the following screen
you will be asked to input your mobile number and fill in the CAPTCHA.

You will then be directed to a page where you need to input the code you will receive via text.

Once this is complete, you are ex-directory and unavailable to spammers and cold callers etc..

"It is simple to unsubscribe but, it MUST be done before the beginning of next week 13/07/09 to make sure that you are ex directory."

Why? They can remove your name from the directory at any time if you choose to.

I think a lot of people have got completely the wrong idea about this:

1. I'm looking for you (yes, you, skulking in the corner there!)
2. I phone or SMS or log onto their website.
3. They ask for details to try and identify you, narrow it down to one number.
4. They call you and ask if you want to receive the call or SMS you a number and name saying "this person is looking for you, call them if you like".
5. They bill me £1 (or whatever it is) for the privilege of doing that, whether or not you decide to talk to me.

Who is going to make a concerted effort to spam you with that kind of rigmarole at a direct cost of £1 per contact?

Probably, just passing on an email I received from a reliable source.

If you don't want to, you don't have to do it..

..noises I have just heard is that phone companies i.e. Vodafone are saying that this is all a great big hoax and it is just a method to get folk's numbers.

But Spokey says it is at their cost so let's face it no one is really going to use the site unless they are desperatly trying to get hold of someone.

Any other thoughts?

Well, your source isn't reliable. I spoke to the hosting company, and you can unsubscribe at any time.

It's definitely not an attempt to get people's numbers. I'm surprised that Vodafone are saying this ... I'm sure it's not an official Vodafone statement.

I could tell you some stories.

But from what I understand, the 118800 guys are taking data security quite seriously.
