My bm is a 1999 e39 530d last night when i got home the message board lit up and it said something like TRANS FAIL SAFE.Anyone know what that means,i took the car out today and the gearbox seemed ok.
A separate fault that has been for some time is that dsc button does not seem to do anything, any clues what to look for.

Make a diagnos of the gearbox and se whats stored in the faultymemory.

Low voltage in the car is also a reason fore transfail safe to come on so check that you have a good working battery with voltage over 12,5Volts and that the alternator works OK.

Low oil level could also be a reason.

Other than checking the condition of the battery there is nothing that you can do except take the car to an Automatic Transmission specialist who can diagnose the car using diagnostic software.

The tranny is a sealed for life transmission and as a result does not even have a dipstick.

Low volatge in my first E60 caused a transmission warning to display on the iDrive.

However the two faults could be related.  The wheel sensors (front) send signals re the cars speed to the ECU to allow the transmission to shift at the correct moment.  Faulty wheel sensors can affect the transmission shifting correctly.

It needs diagnosing using a computer, anything else is pure guess work.

An ordinary garage can tell you the fault codes but most garages will not touch automatic transmission repairs other than swapping in and out complete transmissions hence a trip to a specialist.

Keep us informed

Andrew
