Hi folks,

I have an E30 m3 Conv which I've had for about 5 years. I've just found out that I've got a job down under therfore my dilemma is do i sell or store for a few years. (REALLY don't want to sell - wife is pushing !! )

The car is tucked up in a lock up Sorned at the Mo and has been for over a year as I didn't have it out this summer. If I decide to sell I'll need to Insure which will be about £350, Tax which will be a further £100 + an MOT ( which it will sail through). As it's classic insurance you need to pay in full.

If i put it up for sale it will need to be taxed / mot's and insured so I need to invest about £500 notes to allow me to sell.

My question is - is there any way round the insurance thing ? Ie so i don't need to fork out as much ? + Can you sell a sorned car ?

Thoughts welcome
GARC

Course you can, we sold our Suzuki Vitara which has been SORN'd off-road for over a year. The thing is the lucky person that buys it must take it away on the back of a lorry.

Luckily the chap who bought ours transports cars for a living for folks in exactly this situation.. (Happened to buy a set of alloys off him from fleabay - picked them up and found out he liked doing Suzi's up - then found out what he did for a living which was lucky).

I'd look into the price though as someone a few hundred miles away might find it a bit expensive compared to someone a few streets away.

As above - you can sell a SORNed car just that it is still in your name until the DVLA are informed so if they do drive it away it's you that gets the fine!

Also if you need short term insurance there are companies on the web that offer one day etc. I've used Tempcover before and n probs.

Its a beautiful car and your predicament is not one I envy but if you can find the right person to buy it Id let it go as personally I think it should be out on the road being enjoyed rather than having to be locked up in a garage, even if its just for meets and shows at the weekend.

Good luck with your decision.

Don't mean to sound harsh but are you planning on coming back?

No point in storing a car you are not going to drive again.

I guys thanks for the responses and comments .

I'm going to Oz with an open mind so might not be back. That's the only reason I'm remotely thinking about selling.

I looked into it and not only would it cost a fortune to ship over - I'd also need to have it converted to RHD. !!!

I never thought I'd sell - Ever ! but hey ho.

I can't be bothered selling either. I need to do a couple of things to get 100% to ensure I get as much as I can but I'm struggling to get the time. Plus not sure whether it would sell entering into Autumn / Winter.

( I think I'm trying to convince myself not to sell as I write !! )

Get it converted to RHD (crying shame for fanatics as its a 325i rack) but at least it will be pretty unique over there and as its a drop top - perfect place to have one IMHO.

Other reasons? Less to worry about rust, cheaper fuel (more smiles per gallon) Need I go on..?

Not necessarily...  I'm not an expert but I do know that a colleague from the Alpina Register has just taken his B8 to OZ.  Perhaps there's a loophole for cars which were never made in RHD?

Chas - can you put me in contact with the colleague from the Alpina Register who took his LHD car to Oz and didn't need to convert to RHD.

If this is indeed a loophole I want to know about it.

Many Thanks

He's not a forum user but I'll make some enquiries with the register mods to find out more...

Thanks Chas - although still hitting a brick wall with this. Seems the only way it will let LHD cars into Oz is if it's older than 30.

Anyone know how much it would cost and who would do a LHD to RHD conversion ?????

Yes they did - but a long time ago.

Also remember that the brakes on a RHD E30 (all of them, not just M3's) were pretty  as they were designed for LHD.

IMHO it was sacrilege to change an E30 M3 (even a conv ) from LHD to RHD - and pretty pointless now.

If you can't take it as a LHD,  then sell it in this country.

Very, very nice motor.

If your caught in two minds I'll volunteer to look after it for you. he he.

Its a hard decision, as E30 M3 prices have gone through the roof now.  Even more so as its a conv.  I'd probably hold on if you've got an open mind and may return.  If you stay then sell later as this one looks like it will be snapped up no problem.

Why - after all it's not a "proper" M3

BUMP !!!

NEED SOME HELP.

GARC here - had to re-register coz I forgot all my details.

Anyways ... i'm in Oz and met a mechanic today that specialises in RHD conversions. I've agreed a price and I'm going to go for it and bring the car to Australia when I move with the family in January.

Thing is the guy reckons I'd be better getting the parts in the UK as good dashboards in Oz tend to be hard to get as they crack with the Sun.

So I need a FULL E30 RHD Dashboard and carpet (grey). Anybody know of an E30 breaking in Scotland or a good source for this type of stuff.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

GARC

Could go for clear UV film on the screen to reduce the impact on the dash?

My e30 m3's RHD seing a z3 rack e28 based brake booster and standard manifold umodifed you can come have a look.

Also if it's going to OZ a lot of e30 pats make big money that are cheap here 15" BBS, non cracked dash boards put the car in a contianer with spares and pay for the conversion.

You-pll-it in Inverkiething often have complete cars for £200 get every thing yuo need, when mine was done the used a complete RHD loom, swapped the wipers, door mirror's etc
