Both seem nice enough on paper and photos

If youre viewing both, run your fingers under the arches, check for rust which will come at some point, would need some work after that attack comes.

Both seem to say FBMWSH so you should be fine there, but check it anyway if its important to you. Also check the OBD works as it should, and there are no glaringly obvious errors flashing up.

One more thing, again if its important to you is on the N reg one (cheaper) check the block to see if the Nikisil conversion has been done or not. Like I said if its important to you, then dont take that one. Mine has Nikisil block but all compression and leak tests state its still in tip top condition, therefore I have stopped worrying about it.

Other than that ... you should be ok ... would love the rims on that first motor tho :D

Ah the memories of the straight 6 M52 engine.  The black one has the M52 single vanos engine just like my E39.  T'is a great engine.

Other than Niaksil as mentioned above, check the cooling system for work having been carried out.  Ideally these cars should be on a replacement water pump after 60,000 miles.  After this mileage the plastic impeller breaks off and leaves the car to overheat without any obvious external signs.

Black one does look nice but the shiny wheels could impead your judgement. I like these cars looking original, I think they are the only 3series that pulls off those BBS rims.
I'd like more detailed close up pics and more details on history before travelling. Usuall stuff, many owners, interior condition, radio, tyre tread etc.

Find 4k and I'll sell you an Estoril blue M3 and you only need travel to Motherwell

Alan.
