Hi Lads, After many years of faithful service from the auld e36 316 i finally took the plunge into e39 ownership. Collected the car on monday last and immediately noticed the temp gauge crawling towards the red in traffic but then dropping back to centre and not actually hitting the red zone. Brought the car straight to AC Cars and after new waterpump, termostat, fan clutch and flush all is well (wallet is overheating now though...). So the budget i had for an oil change is gone so im going to give a go myself. I now bmw recommend LL01 long life oil but i plan on changing the oil every 4-5k miles so my question is: Is it ok to use a good 5w30 synth if i change it regularly. That LL01 stuff is fairly pricey. Choose an oil meeting the latest API classification with a viscosity rating of 0W-40 OR 5W-40. See how the API system of classification works in link below. If you are proposing to take the car to the continent where ambient temperatures are hotter, it is advisable to choose a viscosity ration of 5w-50 for better protection against wear. http://www.aa1car.com/library/API_ratings.pdf - http://www.aa1car.com/library/API_ratings.pdf No point in fitting long life oils if you are going to use a short service interval as you are suggesting and your budget is tight. I would recommend that you use long life oils and use the recommended long service interval. Fit the best and then forget but have a little extra for top ups. ------------- Euro Builts are Better. Cheers Mike, will have to do some calculations on cost of LL01 v Synth but ive always changed the oil frequently in my cars (4k miles) and bikes (2k miles). Not sure i can break the habit now... ------------- 1995 316i, 2002 520i |

Red3, the service interval on a '02 520i is generally in the region of 15k miles. On the M52 engines (the earlier family) it is around 12-13k. With my last 5, after it rolled over 100k I switched it from LL Synthetic to Mobil1 semi and doubled the frequency, i.e every 6k-ish. When I sold it a few months ago it was well in to 140's and has now rolled past 150k with the current owner. Given that its a nikasil car, I'd say the policy worked well because even today it doesn't use a drop of oil between changes (never did even with the longer intervals). Go for a good quality semi and change every 7.5k miles and you should be fine. One thing to watch though, the M54 engine in your car is more known for a slight oil thirst. Unless they have been run dry too often it doesn't seem to be a sign of a problem but it just means a bit more diligence is required with dipping it occassionally. If you do find that it drinks a bit (maybe a litre in a thousand miles or so), then change the grade to something like 10w40 and it should help things. Had that experience with a 330 and it worked a treat without any ill effect to the car. Also did the increased frequency changes on that (do it as a matter of course on all of the cars these days). ------------- Now: BMW 523i SE '00, 318i SE - e91 '07, 325i Coupe '93. Well after driving the car for a few weeks its running great apart from one thing, the bl**din gear change. It seems that making a smooth change is fairly hit and miss especially 1st to 2nd. I either get it spot on or i bunny hop down the road and i don't think i've made a smooth change 1st to 2nd yet. Is this a quirk of the car or is it signs of impending clutch destruction or a bit of both. Its booked in for an oil service at M&G's so will see if they can shed any light. Don't think the clutch is slipping either, 70mph is about 3100rpm, is that about right? Cheers again for any info/advice. ------------- 1995 316i, 2002 520i |

Those RPM sounds about right. Is it just that the clutch is sharp or is it juddering? The clutch pedal on my last one got quite heavy around 125k and shuddered a bit, especially in a situation like taking off from standstill up hill, etc. I knew the clutch wasn't slipping. The specialist I use suggested changing the clutch fluid before thinking about changing the clutch. It turned out to be good advice. It improved matters significantly. Slight judder from cold but not much, only first and reverse. Had the brake fluid changed at ac cars last month, does the clutch need to be bled separately?
Problem is i cant guage when the clutch is going to engage and when to get on the gas. First to second is the worst, appears to engage early like hitting the brakes. Other gears are smoother but i can still feel them engage when i release the clutch. Its like ive no direct control over the clutch. I'm needing to change gear very carefully/slowly and let the clutch out completey before applying any throttle. Could this be the cdv playing up? ------------- 1995 316i, 2002 520i |

From your description, it sounds like you could be right in thinking of the CDV. Is the car under warranty? If not, what part of the country are you in? No warranty, private sale....
In portarlington but use ac cars in dublin.AC didnt mention anything after they did the work last month. Ill mention it to the mechanic in murphy & gunn this friday and see if they can diagnose the fault, whether its the car or me.... ------------- 1995 316i, 2002 520i |

Well got the car back from M&G on friday and they said the clutch is worn which is causing the hit or miss gear changes. They've quoted just under 1k for a new clutch, not sure if this is a good price but i'm willing to pay to get it done right once. Will give AC cars a call for a quote too and if anyone here has any suggestions just shout. ------------- 1995 316i, 2002 520i |
