Hi

Time for my first attempt at servicing my 320 D Jan’05 BMW.

The car was covered with the BMW service pack but this has run out.

Anyway the service is inspection 1 .

What is covered in this service?

What is the best oil and rating to use ?

Castrol EDGE 10-60W?

How often should I change the oil ( I travel about 15,000 motorway miles per year) and as the oil is full synthetic is there any point adding any engine oil additives ?

Sorry about all the questions.

Cheers

The schedule of what is covered is at the link below.  I'm assuming that your car is an e46.  Others with diesel engines can better comment on the best oil.  As regards frequency of changes, I know with the e90 320d the intervals stretch to somewhere like 20k.  I'd be scared of leaving oil in a turbo diesel engine for that long so I'd personally look at interim changes (just oil and filter) at about the halfway interval.

You neeed to use an oil that is BMW LL04 compliant if your car has a DPF/soot filter, I believe it does. If it does not then a BMW LL01 oil if fine.

Castrol Edge 10w/60 is neiter of these and is only recommended for BMW M car.

Castrol Edge Turbo diesel 5W/40 is a LL04 oil.

HTH.
