Hello all, my first new posting here.
My E39 5-series had a couple of key scratches in the paint when I got it.  It doesn't bother me too much, but I had a chat with a nice guy from a stone chip/repair company who quoted about €250.  What worried me is that they were gonna re-spray two entire panels - I thought they were going to run along the scratch with an artists brush or similar.  The original paint finish on my car is just stunning and I don't want to end up with a patchwork quilt. 
Have you any experience of scratch removal, does each panel really need to be re-sprayed?

If they just treat a small area then it is more likely to stand out. What they are proposing 9I believe) is that they treat the area affected and then over two panels blend the new paint into the old.

If you fancy a go yourself, and as long as you are careful, you cannot make it any worse, try something like this :

The finish will be as good a match as your touch up stick, but once you have the scratch level (your car is probably lacquered, so you'd apply colour to the scratch, use the kit to remove the excess around the scratch, then use the lacquer stick to get the finish level), in my experience this will be far less noticeable than a spray repair.

According to my paint mate, Graham, the biggest problem with blowing a scratch in is the lacquer.

We now have water soluable paint to worry about, where the dry colour is nothing like the colour that comes out of the gun.

Good luck, have a careful go, you may even enjoy doing it, and providing your careful, you have nothing to lose.
