Subject: E30 or E36

My oldest will be in the market for his very first car soon.

He definatley wants a 318is, but which one. An E30 or E36.

Now I know quite a bit about the E30's but nothing on the E36.

Now bearing in mind it will be his first car and he is only 19, so insurance will be high no matter what car. This is purely down to running costs and reliablity.

I rekon he will have about £2500 to spend on the car

If it were for me it'd be the E30.
For an 19 year old lad though the E36 will hold more street cred.
£2500 will buy an A1 condition E36 version and there will be loads
more to pick from.
E36 are pretty reliable and easy to work on with spare parts 10 a
penny and cheap enough from ECP etc.

Why not give him a shot of your E30 318 first and see if he likes it

E36.

A lot easier to find a decent car and it will be newer so more reliable. Also while the E36 is far from perfect they don't rot like the E30. Far more chance of getting a car with a few creature comforts as well.

Good luck insuring it though. Has he got a few prices yet because it may well be extortionate.

I agree with the E36 being newer and having more creature comforts, and I know only too well of the E30 rust issuse's, but as I fairly competent with the E30.

I would be happy to know a rusty one from a good one, although you don't really know until you strip it to the bare bones.

Are E36's prone to rust apart from a bad repair

I'd be going for the E36 as well Gary, only for the fact that it'll be a better car for Gary, they dont rust as bad, they drive nicer, better street cred!lol

As for rust on the E36, boot lids are bad, just had Steph's sorted as it had spread to the panel below the lid as well. arches are getting bad now as well as wings. Compared to an E30 that would only be the first page of repairs needed!!

E36!!(can't believe even I'm saying this!!)

When i furst past my test. I got a E36 at 18 right after a bit of a run in with the law.. which didnt help insurance cost lolol

And i mainly was in to bmw because my dad had alot of them when i was growing up ranging from E30 325 sport to E36 325 Coupe, E34 M5 and E39 M5 and so on. Plus nobody my age in my area had one.. now im 21 and a couple Bmws down the line (not to mention all the other cars ive own'd, 15 to be exact) im now on to a M52 328 now in a couple weeks time and cant wait  :D

E36's do wonders for street cred ;)

Buy it, that is stunning, dont listen to all of the dingles who've tried to steer you and that poor lad down the "chav" route. I'm a "soon to be" 43 year old man who lives on his own therefor I know what is cool !!

Joking apart, that wee E30 is really lovely. Just think back to the time when the young lads were running about in Novas and MK III Escorts etc, the cool kid had the MK II Escort Mexico and all of the Nova "Posse" were green with envy. (Unless you were me, Manta GTE Exclusive lol) What I'm saying is Retro Cool !!!

It's been withdrawn for some reason.

campbell I agree I love the retro look of the E30 as does wee Gaz, but the E36 is more his era.

If the E30 posted is still around I think he might go for that

I would say heart E30, head E36. The 36 318iS can be had for ridiculous money now, even £1k will get you something acceptable, up to whatever you want to pay. That £1500 silver one looks good for the cash. The e30 is so so cool but maybe not as a first car. The E36 should be more reliable, the E30 possibly needing work every weekend.

E30 all the way "retro rightness"
ive owned a few E30's and apart from the M3 range, a
318iS is probably the best "pound for pound" E30 model
out there.
they are not far behind a 325i only real difference is
top end power, a iS model is by far a better running car
than either the 316i, 318i or 320i

sourse a good E30 318iS
an iS rear end won't catch you out as easy as any 6cyl
E30 can, cheap to run, easier for part's (then again no
E30 is hard to get parts for ... (apart from them pocket
sucking M3 ones )

a good E30 can only go up in value, all E36's are
dropping in value (apart from the M's & EVO's)
also an E30 is a crackin car to start out with for easy
DIY work.

IMO i'd never touch a E36 or an early E46

I'd love to say e30 but some level of practicalities suggest the e36 would be a better solution.  Slight curveball here but how about an e36 318ti Sport - best of both worlds, pound for pound you'll probably get a better  e36 'ti than e36 'IS, the 16v engine, the youngest e36 giving the best chance of finding one without scabby arches, etc., sport seats, etc for some street cred and an e30 rear suspension ('cause everyone should experience the tail effect of an e30 suspension at some point in their lives).

19??? NINE-BLOODY-TEEN??? WHAT??? Where is the time
going? Is this the same son that was slavouring over the
CSL 4 years ago? Na, surely not. That must have been your
younger son.

I remember meeting both of them at my first Gaydon trip
back in 2003 in the Original M3 FDA, Black M3. I wish I'd
taken more photos of that car but to be honest, didn't
have time since I only had it 6 weeks. Anyone
got any? Duncan? Gary?

E36 BTW, in young people's eyes, the E30 is an OLD car,
E36 way cooler.

Thanks for the replies.

Baz yes this is my oldest son, who was slabbering over your CSL and still hankers over one, he is now in his second year at uni.

He doesn't like the compact at all so thats not an option.

Ian these are my thoughts also. However the choice will be his, although I might try and persude him towards the E30. Just to have two back in the garage

Kolher....Good try mate, but I don't think the insurance would be to our liking.
