It's great, this snow stuff.

DSC off and DTC deactivated (hold down traction control button for longer and it goes proper off) and off I went yesterday to B&Q.

Great fun power sliding around an empty bit of their car park.  Bit of steering lock, bit of throttle to get the back to swing out opposite lock on and then on and off the power to hold the slide.  Bo and Luke Duke eat yer heart out.  Yeeeeehhhhaaaawwww

No issues, no need for winter tyres, just sensible driving.

Just not so much fun if it happens on a busy road!

Posted By: Cambell

The only way I got my car to keep movng was to turn off the traction. In this weather you have to use it like a tool to get / keep moving.

I had to do the same thing in a Honda Civic in my street aswell, turned off the traction (when I found the button) and off it went, ok it was wheel spinning but it was moving and kept doing so.

Traction has its place, to catch you when you make an arse of it but to have proper control, switch it off.

(Cambell does not suggest doing this and accepts no liability if you switch your TC off and stuff it into a ditch, thats just bad driving) lol

Winter tyres are brilliant. Mine are part worn but still coped with anything i put in front of it yesterday and today.

Still hate the snow though. A pain in the arse in so many ways.

I had to rely on the traction control this morning to get me going.  It was fitting the revs to just maintain grip with the rear tyres.  I couldn't control it accuratley enough to start with, with the system off.  Put the system on to get me going then switched it off.  TC etc was firmly on when driving into work this morning.  Only one minor wobble on a bend but other than that a cool head and light right foot saw no dramas in 6 inch drifts.

Another day and more snow ...

-------------

Posted By: Cambell
Date Posted: 29-November-2010 at 14:51

More today, my street is at the end of a long avenue and is a Cul De Sac so gets no through traffic.

There is about a foot of soft snow on top of a few inches of compacted snow and ice. No combination of TC on or off was helping today.

I got the van out no problem this morning. Getting back again at 11am was a differrent story. It took 4 men with shovels and 45 mins to get my "go anywhere" Transit from the end of the street and into my drive, an enormous 40m.

I have decoded that its more important to get the van in and out so the snow has had to be piled in fromt of my car, I certainly couldn't block my neighbours drive now could I ?

Here's the antenna on the top of the van

That's some snowfall where you are Cambell!

I've just spent an hour clearing/chipping away at the ice outside my driveway.  Yesterday morning after I left (with no problems I may add) a snow plough came into the street and scraped off the top 4 inches of snow.  The bottom 2 inches of snow were then compacted into solid ice.  Got in the driveway last night as it is down the smallest of slopes but, ahem, struggled getting back up the 200-300 mm rise in my street to join the main road.  So my neighbours were woken by a V8 powered alarm clock at 3,000 rpms at 07.05 this morning in my attempt to get out the street.

Main road was of course fine as it had been previously gritted.  M8 was fine.  Glasgow city centre street were bad.  Not seen a gritter on any road in Renfrewshire since Saturday lunchtime.

Another few from me

(To the top of my Rigger Boots is approximately 11" and my foot wasn't fully down onto the road)

Yes, the digger came around and cleared the road.
Unfortunately it has pushed the snow into a wall at the end of the drive,
so getting the car out will require some serious digging out

Blackie remains all tucked up in his garage whilst I fly away to sunny
BA tomorrow :) let's hope the taxi can get me to the airport and then
the airport be open. Back on 10th.

Given I am missing both the AGM and the Xmas dinner I thought I'd
have an open house one afternoon or evening in December. Kern to
catch up with you all.

Do you think anyone might want to come over?

Day 5 in the Snow Brother House

Only a little more snow overnight, but now at silly levels.
The snow plough came around again and piled more snow at the end of my drive - cars definitely aren't going anywhere now

I want it to go away now. I spent 1 hour 15 mins this morning just getting out of my driveway in the van (which normally goes everywhere)

2 or 3 inches of solid ice then some more inches of hard packed snow then some more flippin inches of powder snow. If it wasn't for 2 neighbours pushing me to block the road and get in the way of a 4x4, I wouldn't have gotten out at all.

The 4x4 really wanted in and so had to tow (drag) me to roads that had seen some salt and out of his way. to the 4x4 driver.

Have I mentioned that I want it to go away now !!!

Couldn't agree more. I am emigrating for a week to warm back up.
Could the committee please arrange for all snow to be away for my
return on Friday 10th.

Unfortunately I have not boarded my 17.30 flight at EDI yet however
even if I miss my connection in Paris at least I will be out of EDI.

Blackie has been valeted today all ready for the sun that you arrange
for upon my return. I promise to distribute club fliers to the 3 other
E92 M3s in my area once Blackie is back on the road as a thankyou.

Smile!

Apparently this is a hot topic on Radio 2, Chris Evans reported this morning that the AA confirm via a police source that it is actually true but they have been advised to use discretion as to the severity of the risk of the snow displacing and causing a hazzard to other motorists.

I personally dont have to worry as my van is clear.
