Hi
I,m considering buying a workshop manual for my 1999 530d.I've looked at the Haynes and it's not very good.
The manual by Bentley is very expensive, does anyone know if it's worth buying? My bm has some issues with the instrument cluster and a slight auto box problem.Anybody used one? cheers JM

The Bentley is a very comprehensive manual.  I have a couple of them and apart from being written in the American vernacular its hard to beat them.

The Haynes manual will not cover your oil burning engine, but it does give you a good guide on how to work on your brakes, suspension etc.  The parts on your 530d will not be hugely different thus not needing a different set of instructions from those on a 528i or a 530i.  As long as you do not treat a Haynes manual as gospel, more like a guide...which should be used with a great deal of common sense.

The Bentley is much better but it is more expensive and you can't just go to your local Halfrauds and pick one up for less than £20 like you can with a Haynes.

The best thing to do is to go on to Ebay and look for a BMW TIS CD rom that covers all BMWs between certain years.  This is a step by step guide on how to work on your BMW.  You enter your chassis number and call up what you are looking for and it gives you step by step illustrated pictures and torque wrench settings.

I did this for my E60, Haynes are unlikely ever to make one for the E60, let alone cover the V8....but I've never needed to do anything to mine in the 35,000 miles I've put on it...so I haven't used in in anger just to look at.

I got a TIS CD very cheap, about a fiver including P&P a few years ago and I've used it many times. Excellent buy. I agree with Andrew, look on ebay.
