Automatic or manual?

Either way a transmission specialist is the only option really. Not really a DIY prospect unless you go for a straigh swap with a second hand or recon unit.

Sorry to hear about your trany problem. I know when I changed an engine in a 2000 328i a year ago those upper bolts were just a lot of fun. My 2001 525i project that I purchased last month was reported by the previous owner that it might be low on fluid slnce the trany lines were damaged ln a wreck. Will be watching to see how your problem turns out. Good Luck. Old Car Guy.

Assuming it is an automatic and assuming your mate lives in the same part of the world as you and I do, the best place to take it is Mackies Automatic Transmissions on Causeywayside Street at Tollcross in Glasgow.  They are ZF specialists.  If it is a petrol 530 it will have a ZF box but if it is inflicted with an oil burning engine it will have a GM box, both of which Mackies can have a look at.

Won't be cheap but it will cost less than a second hand re-con box.

I don't suppose you know how the the fluid was topped up as these boxes are sealed for life?  You need a ramp and fluid being injected under pressure or a Heath Robinson arrangement of pipework to fill an autobox in an E39.

If the box or cooler has been leaking then it may have burnt out the torque converter.

I have a few gearboxs in stock just now.
