Over the past few weeks I have heard an occasional scrapping sort of sound from the front of my engine. However its stops for days sometimes but as I had my diagnostic stuff plugged into day I had teh engine idleing for some time and tracked it down to the are of the water pump or the termostat housing.

It only does the sound when idling as soon as the revs are lifter it stops. If I hold the ater pipe from the top hose I can sort of feel the noise, I know the water pumpm and the electric thermostat can have issues, just passed the 113k mark on a T plate will no major issues in its lifetime. Anyone had a similar noise, alost like a dry pulley wheel, can the thermostat make a noise? if it is the pump would it not get noiser as the revs were raised?

Thanks in advance

Odds are its the water pump on its way out, though the fan coupling can make a creaking noise sometimes. The noise would change in both cases due to rising revs.If your engine is running a bit warmer than usual, that would firm it up.
