I was reading an article entitled http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/logo-evolution/ - "Logo Evolution of 25 Famous Brands"

However, for the BMW entry, it reads ...

but we all know it is to do with  the colours/pattern of the Bavarian State Flag - right?
