So my 635csi is definitely overheating. When sitting in traffic the needle goes well past the centre, but then after a little blast it comes back down. Just wanted a bit of advice of where to start? I've done the newspaper test on the fan and it seems fine. Would it be best to change the water pump and thermo first? Also do these have the tricky blue temp sensor on the block like the E30's? Would certainly start with the thermostat. It could be something more sinister causing the overheating. Is there any mayo under the oil filler cap? ------------- Be exclusive and drive a Petrol 5 Series! The blue temp switch is used by the ecu for cold start purposes, so that is not going to be your issue. The brown temp sender switch could be an issue, they have these same part # as e30's, but if the gauge is registering correctly at other times then it is probably OK. Does your car have an auxilary fan infont of the radiator? If yes, then this could be at fault or one of the switches/relays that control it. If you do not have this fan and there is no mayo on the filler cap then I would start with a coolant 'sniff test' then a coolant pressure test before throwing parts at the car. -------------

Okay so I've had the viscous fan changed, water pump and thermo, but still overheating on idle. When sitting still the car overheats but with a bit of gas it does move towards the centre. Does anyone know why this is?
Also the next step I wanted to take was to change the temperature sensor. Could someone kindly point out which sensor would be appropriate to change, BMW part num would be great.

Getting it to cool after increasing the engine revs says to me that it needs the effect of the slight increase in viscous fan speed to make it cool. Is the thermo the correct one? They can have different opening temps. Might be a partially blocked cooling system. Try flushing the rad and block with a garden hose. It will mean taking of a rad hose and re-filling it with correct coolant mixture. Have a look at http://www.realoem.com" rel="nofollow - www.realoem.com for your part numbers. Jus a quick question, does anyone know what temp the E24 thernostat should open? I think I may have the wrong one.... |
